Balanced Defense

Created by: JonMac87
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 11, 2020
Published: May 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Defense needs to be a priority.

Hate to give up Nylander, but a top RD is needed for the Leafs to take the next step IMO. Although older Parayko comes in slightly cheaper than Nylander.

Bennett adds some much needed grit with scoring potential.

Robertson riding shotgun with Tavares might be a stretch, as he most likely plays next season in the minors, however he offers the long term potential for a scoring threat on JT's wing that Nylander previously provided.

Why does St. Louis do that? If they move a RHD, it's to clear cap to bring Pietrangelo back. Trading one for a larger cap hit is counterproductive and leaves them with a big hole on their blueline.

It is absolutely to bring Pietrangelo back and play him on his strong side. Also allows them to sign Dunn and move him up the lineup.

I get that, but you are not trading Parayko to shed salary, you need to have a strong asset coming back in return. Yes, another player needs to be moved to sign AP. He already is accounted for 6.5 million against the cap, assuming he makes 9, that's 2.5 + 1.4 extra for Nylander + whatever you pay Dunn. That is doable cap space to create.

They have about $2m in cap space next year assuming a flat cap. Parayko out, Nylander in is about $1.5m more cap coming their way and they still need to sign 2 defenseman (one being Pietrangelo in your scenario) to have 6. The math says they don't remotely consider this.

This doesn’t make the Blues a better team. Tarasenko is our top line RW, after him we got Perron who was on track to score 70 this year, then we have Kyrou who looks like he’ll be a good player on an ELC.

I can see form a St. Louis perspective now, that this deal will not work, mainly for Cap reasons. ....With that being said, I think Nylander is a huge upgrade to the Blues' offense. Tarasenko is a question mark coming back from injury, Kyrou looks promising but is unproven and Perron will be 32 at the start of next season. I think Nylander would slot nicely 2 RW/LW

Matthews is untouchable. But what’s a fair trade if you involve Marner? I doubt it is one for one. I think Marner has more value but he’s double the salary, although locked up longer. What would your trade look like involving Marner and Parayko?
