Realistic offseason for the Wild

Created by: TanSor
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: May 12, 2020
Published: May 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Guerin likely doesn't find a team willing to give up a top 6 center for one of our blue liners after Dumba's lackluster season and Brodin's pending free agent status. Galchenyuk fit in well but it was a small sample size so he gets a 1 year prove it deal to see if he can stick long-term. Soucy may not be willing to re-sign knowing he doesn't have a place in the top 4 even though he deserves a longer stint there.

I think Kunin gets a little more money for 3 years. Around 2.8 - 3mil

I'd be happy with that

I'm not against the idea of bringing back Haula to be the 2C for a short contract. He can be a solid player when given quality linemates, assuming his leg injuries haven't slowed him down.

To real for me!
If this is the best Guerin can do then that sucks.
It's not a rebuild and it's not a playoff run. At best it's a lose in the first round team at worst it's a just out of the playoffs team.

I'm against it personally. Russo mentioned in a podcast a while back (probably over 6 months ago, if not longer) that Haula was not very happy here near the very end and people in the locker room took note. Similarly, his time in Carolina didn't end on a happy note it seemed (there were rumors he didn't get along with Rod the Bod). Seems like he's sort of a locker room cancer. He's a solid player, no doubt, but I've heard enough about his character that turn me off on him.

Couldn't agree more. I hope I'm wrong and Guerin can swing a trade for a top 6 C (not named Domi or Strome). Or maybe a miracle happens and we draft Byfield/Stutzle/Rossi.

I hadn't heard that, but I agree it's probably best to give Galch a try instead then. Guess we'll see who they draft and if Khovanov can be a player in a couple years.

The problem they've had since pretty much forever. Not good enough to win it all, not bad enough to get a star.

Why is Van just giving away Boeser? Markstom is a pending UFA so no value?

This is what I've been thinking the team would be for awhile, and I don't mind if it happens. For a 1 year run it's not a bad team. It doesn't fix the longterm center problem, but that's par for the course in MN.

I actually like this team more than the Coyle/Granny/Nino/Zucker (all of them passengers) teams MN had for years.

I do think goalie KK will get a shot next year though. I also think Donato is the odd FWD out not Hartman, but he and Rask are nice to have as injury replacements. Soucy is a guy I want back, but could see him walking this offseason. It would be a revolving door of Belpedio, Hunt, Menell, and Pateryn on the bottom pair until someone takes the spot.

I'd like to see Haula signed on a 1 year deal. The front office, coaching staff, and most of the FWD group has had an almost complete turnover of people since he was shipped to Vegas. He'll get good wings, PP time, and have no real competition for a roster spot; which is all he really seems to want. If not Haula then re-sign Chucky.

This year doesn't have an interesting UFA class (other than the goalies) for the Wild, and there isn't much for trades that address any of their team needs. Maybe the trade market will open up as teams try to make their caps work?

There is a reason his nickname was “Haula-famer” when he played for the Gophers...and it had nothing to do with his talent, and everything to do with how he thought of himself and acted...
I’d consider a 1 year deal with him and hope for one of two results: he plays great, the team plays great and makes it past the 1st round of the playoffs...OR, he plays great, the team stumbles, and he gets dealt at the deadline. I would consider the same strategy with Galchenyuk too.

What Haua needs is a place where he can be the captain and the one in charge. In Minnesota, he was playing behind Parise, Coyle, Grandlund, Nino, Pomminville, Zucker, and Vanek. In Vegas, he was somewhat in the shadows of Eakin, Karlsson, Marchessault, Neal, Perron, and Smith, and in Carolind, he was following Aho, Teravainen, Necas, Foegele, Nino again, and Staal. Maybe he feels that he isn't appriciated and wants to be somewhere where he is the head of the team.

He wants to be in charge, but hasn't shown the leadership to make that happen. If things don't go his way he pouts and does things like ask for a trade or quit on the team. This is 100% the reason MN had to burn a year of JEEs ELC slide. Haula got pouty after the Hanzel trade and quit on the team after being demoted to the 4C. Haula was the weak link in the top-9 that year, it's what made them go after Hanzel in the first place.

I'd bring him back on a cheap 1 year prove it deal. He's the best center on the market; but with the recent injuries, demanding a trade because he wasn't getting what he wanted, and expansion draft next year I don't think teams will be lining up to sign him for big money/term.

Haula reminds me a bit of Jimmy Butler
