I saw someone saying that since the oilers don’t have a true future number one, they should trade up to get askorov.

Personally I don’t like it as he’s most likely going in the top ten and you gotta give up a good asset to get there.

Thoughts?

I don’t think so. I like Askarov I just believe team biggest need is a good LW or RW like mysak or Mercer or Jarvis or Forester

Only way I see it is if he's on the board around 9 or 10 when Chicago is picking or NJD has their second of three first round picks. At that point the gap between 20 and 10 could be made up by Larsson or Nurse... If you're sure he's your guy then put on your big boy pants go get him... If you're not sure then don't pull the trigger, address the wings and find a goalie elsewhere... Either way you have depth at D with Klefbom, Larsson, Russel, Nurse, Jones, Bear, Benning, Broberg, and Bouchard... whether you use that to trade up for Askarov, a winger, or move pieces for needs or to free up cap space for a free agent you should be moving Defense this summer... Lehner and Markstrom are both Free Agents and could be your answer in net.

Edmonton have a future number one in Konolov, I don't see why they'd trade up. Plus they have Skinner who had a high ceiling when he was drafted, I don't know what he is now, I don't pay much attention to a team on the other side of the world to me. I don't think it's worth it either, because I cannot see Askarov dropping past chicago at 9 either.

it makes more sense to draft a goalie in rounds 3-5 back to back to back then it does to trade up for askarov. first round goalies hardly pan out.

"... since the oilers don’t have a true future number one..."

How many teams have a "true future number one"? Probably not more than 5 or 6... the Oilers have 2 guys who could realistically develop into number ones in Konovalov and Rodrigue. I wouldn't trade up for Askarov, but if the scouts were totally gung ho about the guy I'd certainly be open to taking him at #20 if he fell that far.

Revisiting... I think if Askarov is there at 20 they should seriously consider taking him, but I wouldn't trade up to get him. If they end up picking in the 12-15 range, I think there might be a forward available who will have a greater impact sooner. One of Rodrigue or Konovalov will emerge as an NHL starter IMO.
