Gaudreau to NJ plus Domi MTL

Description
The Hall to ARI trade is the best/freshest comparable for a Gaudreau trade. Fair to argue that Hall is more valuable than Gaudreau, of course, but I think that balances out when you factor in that ARI paid a 1st + 3rd + 3 prospects for the final year of Hall's deal, whereas Gaudreau has 2 seasons of term. That's a big difference.

Why are Domi and Gaudreau getting similar returns?

    MTL doesn’t take that
Kylington is a #7 right now or #6 at best
    Merkley is totally useless
    16OA .... Bergevin hang up

I’d be willing to swap McLeod for Merkley if it meant giving up a 4th or 5th next year instead of the 3rd. If the value is the same and NJ can’t fetch an additional late round pick, I’d still rather give up McLeod...

Man..... as a Habs fan I would rather just find a way to do a Gaudreau for Domi type deal...

As for the deal itself, I'd be pretty close to accepting that deal. I'd prefer removing Kylington and Merkley for Valimaki though. Maybe even bump that 3rd rounder to the Habs STL 2nd instead.

    I wouldn’t do Domi for Välimäki 1 for 1, valimaki is a futur top 2 d man

Why are the flames paying more for Domi than they are getting for gaudreau?

So i assume Kylington is a bottom pairing dman then?

I think Treliving would consider a deal with Gaudreau and Domi going each way +/- some assets to balance it. If Domi's extension was a known $/term, then it becomes much easier to balance the deal.

#16 overall in this draft is a pretty huge ticket though...

And I'm very confident that Treliving wouldn't include Valimaki in any deal. He's the top prospect in the CGY system (that doesn't sound like much), but he's pegged as a top pair dman. Pretty brutal that he got injured and we didn't get to see him this year. Kylington played 48 games as a result, and proved that he's got a lot of potential. Needs more ice time to develop. As I mentioned in the notes, I think Kylington is already a better player than Mete, so maybe he and Romanov compete for that 2nd pair LD spot this year, with Romanov having the inside lane.

    It's not more.

The #10 pick is worth much, much more than the #16 overall pick in any draft. Doesn't mean that the #10 always turns out to be the better player though. But #10 holds a ton of value this year.

That Gaudreau deal is slightly cheaper than the Hall deal. Gaudreau has more term than Hall, and a great AAV. So I structured the deal to be cheaper than Hall's so that NJ can look at it and say, "we get a hometown all-star with a bit of term, plus we get to keep a couple of the prospects from the ARI deal". Should make it a slam dunk, in my opinion.

For CGY, Kylington is a depth guy. Giordano, Hanifin, Valimaki are a lock for the left side. And Kylington is likely going to get snapped up by Seattle in expansion if he's on the roster, so might as well move him to a team with a LD need to get a player like Domi back. Note that there is a 3rd rounder coming back with Domi in my proposal. So #16 overall (versus #10 overall) plus a third rounder is worth a good deal more than the inclusion of Kylington (worth a 2nd round pick straight up). On this site, it helps to overpay a bit to get GMs to see the value being worth it. Some Habs fans will like the deal, others will hate it.

Kylington Reaves are making to much

I don't think Treliving can offer Talbot more than Rittich. Which kind of sucks, because I was really impressed with Talbot in 2020 and I think he's going to find his form again. Realistically, I could see a team like DET being smart and offering Talbot $3.5M x 2 years, a deal that CGY probably "can't" match.

I overpaid Kylington as a placeholder to be conservative with cap space. I'd venture he's probably going to sign something closer to $900k.

I overpaid Reaves for similar reasons, plus to make it financially worthwhile for him to come to CGY given that he'll pay much higher taxes up north than in VGK.

Mangiapane could get a $4M long-term deal potentially, but on a short-term "earn your next ticket" deal, I don't think he has a strong enough RFA case for more than $2-2.5M.

Gustafsson is good dman in my view. You don't get 62 points in 79 games as a dman by accident. I was impressed with his play in CGY. Personally, I'm hoping that Treliving lets both Brodie and Hamonic walk to UFA. But my gut tells me he's going to lean towards extended Hamonic in the $4.5M x 4 year range...I'd happily pay Gus $4.5M after he puts up 45 points next year on a slightly cheaper deal. Like Talbot, Gustafsson is another guy CGY could see walk for more money elsewhere.

    @F50marco

Any idea what a Domi/Gaudreau swap could look like?

What about: Domi + 2nd (CHI) + 2nd (STL) for Gaudreau + Kylington

Knowing Bergevin's track record it's either a straight trade or a couple conditional pick on top of it.

I would do this in a heartbeat.

BTW Domi extensions are probably ranging from 5.5x3Y - 6.5x6Y.
