Habs agressive stunners Price to COL cap space for Barzal

Created by: nilees24
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2020
Published: May 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For the Habs to improve on offense & defense they'll have to give up their crown jewel in net. And yes, for the Habs to resign pillar players long-term (Gallagher, Danualt, Petry), their only option is departing with Price's 10.5 million cap space. Sakic is in need of a goaltender with a high pedigree, Price would waive his no-trade clause for a Cup contender in the Western conference. MTL can ride Francouz and Crawford as BRIDGE goaltenders until Primeau is ready to go for the 2022/23 season. Give them both 40 games each and find out which one is good to go for a playoff run.

Projected cap space - (81.5 mill salary cap spikes to 84.5 mill for 2021/22)

Word out of Montreal is Ilya Kovalchuk is a lock to return (likely 3 mil/yr deal with performance bonuses). Feeling is Tatar & Weal are not affordable to re-sign for 2021/22 season (unless Drouin is traded in 2021-22). All other UFA's/RFA's at start of 2021/22 (Gallagher, Danault, Petry, Armia, Lehkonen, Poehling, etc.) can be resigned at fair market value (total cap hit for top 23 players just under $84 mill for 2021/22 season).

2021/22 Contract Offers (UFA's/RFA's):
Gallagher 6 yr / 43.5 mill (7.25 mill/yr.)
Danualt 6 yr / 36 mill (6 mill/yr.)
Petry 4 yr / 22 mill (5.5 mill/yr.)
Armia 4 yr / 16 mill (4 mill/yr.)
Lehkonen 3 yr / 9 mill (3 mill/yr.)
Poehling 2 yr / 1.7 mill (850k/yr.)
Caufield 3 yr / 2.775 mill (925k/yr entry-level deal.)

Carey Price has negative trade value. This is completely delusional

Not negative but MTL would have to retain 3 mil in order to have his full value. And I doubt Bergevin will do that

Why would Colorado give up all of that for a goalie that’s has been trending downward for the last couple of years and still has a 6-year contract worth $63M left on his deal? Yikes that’s awful for the Avs

COL has plenty of cap space to entertain Price's contract in full. Maybe change the 1st rd to a 3rd rounder I suppose.

6 years even at $7.5M is still a tough pill to swallow for a guy that’s already trending in the wrong direction at 32 years old. Retention is definitely a step in the right direction if they want to trade him, but it’s an extremely tough contract for any team to stomach.

COL has tons of cap space and could entertain the full value of Price's contract. Sakic wouldn't shy away. Maybe change the 1st rd to a 3rd rounder I suppose.

It’s up there with contracts like Jamie Benn and Brent Burns. Pretty bad now, but absolutely atrocious 3+ years down the line.

So long as Sakic and Lou follow this wise advice, those trades aren't happening.

They don’t have cap questions now, but Price still has 6-years remaining on his contract. With guys like MacKinnon, Landeskog, Makar, Byrum, and Rantanen all up for contracts during the duration of Price’s deal, that may not always be the case. Who knows where they are going to be in 2025, but Price’s $10.5M cap hit is going to be an anchor tied around their necks for quite a while.

Just no need to take on that contract when they currently have a goalie in Francouz that’s better than Price at this stage in their careers.

LOL. I literally laughed out loud when i saw that Colorado trade. That's sooooo bad.

Girard is a #2D signed at $5m for 7 years, and with a steal of a contract like that he's worth more to us than Byram right now. Francouz is 5th in the league in sv% this season, and signed for another two years at $2m, also a steal. Why would we give them up (along with a 1st no less) for a cap dump who doesn't really improve our goalie situation at all at this stage?

To everyone replying to this proposal....

It's been made, it's been argued, like a million times. Regular Habs fans on here get it, Price is the worst contact in the league according to this site.

Please forgive the new comer

Colorado is not winning a Cup with Francouz. So much cap space in COL, I'd be floored if they didn't shoot for a top-tier goaltender. I remind you that Price is a top-5 goaltender for the next 3 years. That is COL window to win a Cup.

This COL trade makes the Avs a cup contender for the next 3 years. Gives the HABS two goalies to bridge for Primeau's arrival in 2022/23.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. For MTL to improve on offense, defense, and in cap space. Price has to go. Avs need him for the next 3 yrs.

Price isn’t a top-5 goalie though. Rask, Bishop, Kuemper, Vasilevskiy, Hellebuyck, Jarry, Binnington; all of these goalies are better than Price at this point in their careers. Price has had the better career, sure. But Colorado wouldn’t be trading for his past successes. They would be trading for a 32-year old on a bad contract who’s best seasons are behind him.

haha exactly. Terrific comparison .... Patrick Roy and Carey Price. Sakic remembers how that deal worked out in 96 and 01.

You misunderstand me... grubauer is better than price is the last few years.

You cant have either for that albatross of a goalie contract
