That trade would made Toronto a contender and Nashville A Lottery Pick team.

Marner is worth as much as a 90+ point winger in his early 20s is worth. I don't think his cap hit would impact his value because he is THAT good. Could teams acquire Patrick Kane for cheap after he signed his 10.5M deal? Marner could pretty much fetch any dman a team was willing to move outside of the very elite of Hedman, Josi, Carlson, etc

It's probably around that ballpark, without the retention though.

Marners trade value is complicated by being the 2nd highest paid winger in the league despite not signing a max term deal with a contract made up almost completely in signing bonuses.

With the cap likely staying flat at best, it will limit the teams who can afford him. Toronto would likely have to take money back in any trade (doesn't have to be bad money).

When Patrick Kane signed his 8 year 10.5 million dollar contract it was his 3rd contract not his 2nd contract. he signed it a year in advance of it starting and was a UFA for every year of it.

Prior to signing he put up seasons of 72, 70, 88, 73, 66, 55 (in 47 games), 69 (in 69 games) points.

He had also won 2 stanley cups and a conn smythe trophy.

When Marner signed his contract it was his 2nd contract. He had put up seasons of 61, 69 and 94 points and had won zero playoff series.

Not the best comparison on a number of levels.

What he "is worth" really isn't that relevant. The Leafs are not moving him. Is he overpaid? Yes, I think so. Is he really good at hockey? Yes, I know so.

The team would not have dropped that kind of dough and signing bonus structure on the doorstep of a player that they were planning on shipping out of town. They love the kid. Rightly so.

Marner isn't going anywhere.

I agree with all of this.

I agree as well to point....I don't think the Leafs were expecting the salary cap to stay at 81.5 mil next year and for maybe a couple of years....so I am sure they did not expect to be handcuffed as mush with the core 4...….i'd say any Marner deal would look something like what was proposed....no money retained....Leafs will get at least 2 good players that equal close to what Marner makes.....no choice in that so they will lose a top player but be better overall.....why another team would do that I do not know....
