1st Round Pick Trades with NJD and CHI

Description
Not positive on the full value of 1st round picks for this year's draft due to the tiers of prospects and the inconsistency of draft pick trade value charts. The New Jersey trade is based on what I could find.

New Jersey moves up to get a better prospect at #7 and a 26-year-old RFA #3/#4 RD.

Chicago gains approximately $4MM in cap space, a middle 6 winger, a #4/#5 LD, and mid-1st round pick.

2nd/3rd line RW for Buffalo is filled by one of Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens, or Casey Middlestadt. One of the Buffalo prospects has to step up at some point.

if you add in 2020 4th Devils accept, wow. Never thought of a deal like this, but I love it for us. Only reason I say add the 4th is because we don't have a 2nd or 3rd so after 7th oa we wouldn't be picking for a long time, could use two 4ths to trade into the 3rd.

I agree there is value in that trade. (Especially if we won the lottery with our pick and used the new one to draft the goalie), but I wish we were getting different players back... we traded Kahun and we don’t need the defenseman.

I love it but it would have to be a 3way deal. I'm not trading 7 for 10 and 17 unless it's a guarantee that the second trade happens for Strome.

What type of players would the hawks be looking for? I would actually prefer to keep Kahun to play 3rd line LW, allowing Johansson to play RW and skipping trying to lure a decent RW UFA. I assumed you would want a cheaper defenseman to save on the cap and a middle 6 forward but, would gladly send a prospect back instead.

That's a great idea with the Devils tbh but I wouldn't trade Kahun nor do I think Chicago would get him back. For Strome I think the 17th OA and a guy like Tage would be fair

As a hawks fan I wouldn't mind swapping Kahun for middlestat and a late pick

IMO Buffalo would kill to make that deal:
BUF
Zacha for free because
2020 1st round pick (ARI) + 2020 1st round pick (VAN) >= Montour, Brandon + 2020 1st round pick (BUF)

Then Buffalo gets a good #2 Center for unproven Pilut and Kahun and a mid first.

Buffalo moves down 3 spots in the draft, gets 2 centers and a veteran LHD for good RHD and 2 unproven performers.
This would put the Buffalo GM as the front runner as GM of the year.

I don't know if I agree with that. In a draft where there are approximately seven to eight-tier one prospects, this allows NJD to move up a tier and get a good RD while trading away from their position of strength (Center). Montour+4th (as requested above) > Zacha and 7th < 10th & 17th however, the difference in value between the two standalone swaps is pretty close IMO.

For the CHI trade, you are omitting the $4MM+ cap savings that CHI gets and that Pilut has been good as a #4/#5D when played in the NHL even making Risto look better than he is when paired together. As for Kahun I think he is a solid Middle 6 winger but, I would gladly send a prospect in his place as wingers who put up points are definitely needed on the sabres. Sending a prospect in place of Kahun may make the trade even better for CHI as they could gain more than $6MM in space instead of $4MM.

I agree this would definitely be a good get for Botterill and I don't have a ton of faith he could pull it off but, I wouldn't say any team is really losing in this scenario (additional mid-round picks may be needed but not sure). It is more each team acquiring what they need, BUF gets their needed 2C and 3C while still able to get good prospects in this year's draft, NJD gets better at RD and the ability to pick another tier 1 prospect, and CHI gets cap space ($4MM or $6MM), a middle 6 forward or prospect, and a mid 1st round pick to stock their pipeline.

Well we agree the first trade favors the Sabres as you indicated, both portions favor the Sabres.
The second trade while closer still favors the Sabres, but maybe Buffalo would pass. Kahun and Pilut may develop and the pick is valuable. So let's agree to pass on it.
