Filling Out The Roster No Trade

Created by: Claesson4Norris
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2020
Published: May 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sens who have jobs locked up:

Tkachuk White Batherson
Duclair Tierney Brown
Ryan
Paul Anisimov

Chabot Zaitsev
Wolanin Zub

Nilsson
Hogberg

Open Jobs: Middle Six C, Middle Six LW, 4th Line RW, LD, RD

Middle Six C: Logan Brown/Josh Norris. I think Logan Brown will be given the opportunity over Norris, but Norris could easily take the job.

Middle Six LW: Balcers/Brown/Formenton/Chlapik/Abramov.
I think Balcers is the most likely fit, though Formenton could easily be there too. If Norris takes the open C spot, Brown is the obvious choice. Chlapik could be a fit, though ultimately I think he's a better 4th line option. I'm going with Balcers.

4th line RW. Chlapik/Balcers/Hawryluk.
If Balcers loses the middle six spot, He's an obvious choice. Chlapik is my favorite option, but Hawryluk is a natural RW and has more NHL experience. I'm going Chlapik.

Open D Spots: Borowiecki/Brannstrom/Reilly/Lajoie/Jaros
I think Boro will almost certainly be brought back to fill the 3LD spot, though if he isn't signed Brannstrom is the obvious choice. The RD spot could be filled by Jaros who is the only RHD option, but more likely it will be Reilly or Brannstrom. I think Brannstrom is the obvious choice of the two.

Extras: Reilly, Hawryluk, Beaudin

Sens being my 2nd favourite team might start to pay off again in next few years. The forward prospect pool is getting insanely deep, just to iron out the defence/goalies and should be bright future

Yeah, barring any 2020 picks making the team of course. There are a few upset options, like Formenton who could easily be the 3rd line LW next year. It would be so convenient for The Sens if Logan Brown could finally take a hold of that top 6 C spot this year. I still want him to work out in Ottawa.

And this is without taking into consideration that the Sens could have two of Lafreniere/Byfield/Stutzle/Raymond. They should be back to the playoffs by 2022.

Well they will have two of them, feel like one has to be Byfield then whichever winger they can get (assuming they don't win the lottery which changes everything). Can't see them going for Drysdale they already have 3 young RD prospects from last two drafts

Byfield really is a perfect fit for Ottawa.

I didn't imagine us being a playoff team next season anyway and THIS line up almost guarantees us another top 5 pick in 2021. I say "Sure. Why not!"

This is the likeliest of scenarios if no picks make the team out of camp.

It's make or break for L. Brown. He won't be given anything if someone like Norris outshines him in camp or if Ottawa lands Byfield and he comes in and makes a splash for #2/3C. He's caught in a weird place being too good for the AHL and just not good enough for top 6. He's a lot less versatile then someone like Norris who can basically come in and play anywhere. You made another ACGM where he played the wing and I think that could be a better fit than C right now. There was a point when Belleville went with Brown-Paul-Batherson so it's not out of the realm of possibilities.

No complaints on the bottom 6. So many options.

I'm really pulling for Jaros. I just think it'd be a huge mistake by management if they didn't give him more opportunity and ice-time. He's got everything a new age defensive minded D has in speed and physicality. Depth chart disagrees with me, though. We'll see how Zubby plays.

It's Hogberg's net to lose this year IMO. They'll play Nilsson for ice-time and to up his trade value but, right now, Hogberg is the future.

Yep. the future looks very bright... but Melnyk is still a big, dark-ass cloud lurking in that beautiful sky.

I think the measuring stick this coming season is still individual growth over team success. Unless Tkachuk, Batherson, Chabot, and Brannstrom all went beast mode and they got insane goaltending, there's just no way Ottawa makes a run.

Also adding another top 5 pick is not a bad thing. If Ottawa could land Brandt Clarke in 2021, you're looking at an unreal Dcore of the future.

I think Logan Brown is good enough that you at least start him at the open centre slot. Norris can still benefit from starting in Belleville next year. I think it's still best for Ottawa for Brown to develop as a C, then eventually move Colin White to RW, because Ottawa is weaker on the Right side. That said, I think moving him to LW is an option if he struggles, and I think you move Norris up at that point. Otherwise I think Norris stays down until Tierney is traded at the deadline.

I think Jaros can be an NHL player, I just don't really see an opening for him in Ottawa. If there's only one open spot, it should absolutely go to Brannstrom over Jaros. The only scenario where he has a shot is if Boro is not re-signed, and Brannstrom plays on the left side ahead of Wolanin. I can't see them going with Branny-Jaros on the 3rd pair. If Reilly wasn't already under contract, I'd have Jaros as 7th D.

I think Nilsson should still get the majority of the Starts at the beginning of the year. Hogberg was incredible this season, but he's still less than 30 games into his NHL career, and you still want him fighting to get extra starts. Also I don't think you trade Nilsson. I don't know if any of the goalies in Belleville are really banging down the door for an NHL job after next year, and Nilsson could be brought back for another year. Daccord might be ready, but I'm not sure.

Oh yeah, I wasn't being a jerk with my comment. This seems like the right thing to do. I like that Boro is just signed to a one year deal and that no one is getting horribly under or over evaluated. I do doubt that Logan Brown shows up ready for top 6 though. I'd also swap Paul and Anisimov because Paul is much better in the face off circle.

I think if you move anyone to 4C over Arty, it's Chlapik. He's been a strong defensive C at the AHL level, and he's been a good defensive player in the NHL. He needs to get reps in at C at some point. Nick Paul is great, but the way he plays lends itself better to playing on the wing. I think both are valuable 4th line pieces going forward.

Not unless Paul takes the draws and then slides back into LW duty. Sorry but I'll take Paul's 51% FOW vs' Chlapik's 38% every time. Especially if we're talking 4th line. Nick Paul is over 50% in the defensive zone too, whereas Chlapik is an abysmal 33% - that'll cost us too many scoring chances against. A line of Chlapik, Paul and Hawryluk would be super fun to watch IMO. Defensively sound and forechecking like beasts.
