They need to rebuild

Description
First off....Bergevin needs to be fired. He has shown that he has not thought out any sort coherent plan for his team since missing the playoffs in 15-16. He is too conservative to mortgage the future for a shot at the cup like Columbus and I don't think ownership would ever let him rebuild the team he constructed over almost 10 years. This current core of players will never be good enough to win a cup. And by the time any of Caufield, Kotkaniemi, and Suzuki become legitimate stars, Weber's career will be over and the back end will need reconstruction anyway. Of course Bergevin could throw money at all 4 of their major UFA's next year and hope for a Carey price resurgence to get them to the playoffs. But they will never be balanced enough to beat a team like the Bruins or Lightning. The Canadiens have not been to the second round since 14-15. Doubling down on this lineup would be embracing mediocrity. Gallagher and Danault are good player's and seem to be the most likely to re-sign. However, If the Canadiens want to make the rebuild meaningful they need to tank hard. The 2021, 22 drafts are loaded with top end talent, potential superstars like Aatu Raty and Shane Wright. The futures Montreal would receive in a trade will probably be much more suited for and contending team in 4-5 years time then Gallagher or Danault. Price and Weber have contacts that are very hard to move so I don't see it happening. If Weber retires it's Nashville's problem.
Domi is not a real NHL centre-man. This means you will not be able to trade him for a 1st or second line centre without futures. He is young enough that he could possibly be a stop gap centre while they tank and move to the wing once the team is stronger down the middle.

All the trades below aren't that serious, they are just ideas. The primary idea being SELL!

The 2021 draft will be very weak. Raty had a weak year and I don't see him going number 1 over Clarke anymore. 2022 draft is stacked tho and 2023 is pretty good with Bedard and Michkov

Probably a veteran like Armia or Byron. Focus on protecting younger players.

First of all, Bergevin is the best GM we had in so many years. Only people with a negative IQ wants him to be fired

The year to tank is 22, everyone already knows why. Probably the best 1oa for the next decade.

I have no problem with the position this team is in. We have unique team that has some great veterans on it, some great talent that’s 25 and under and one of the top prospect pools in the league that is in position to add to that this off season. Whether you want to admit it or not we are rebuilding we’re just doing it in a way that still allows us to be competitive. The reality is we’re not allowed to suck for a long period of time it’s not how this organization operates. Have some patience.

Not enough for Puljujarvi. Holland has already rejected a better offer.

It's funny to see people calling Bergevin a ''conservative GM'' while over the last four years he concluded 4 of the biggest trade around the league (Subban, Galchenyuk, Pacioretty and Sergachev for Weber, Domi, Drouin, Suzuki and Tatar).

Beside that, everything in here is no good.

What exactly has he won? When a GM has missed the playoffs 3/4 years and is not rebuilding he gets fired.

Besides the Sergachev trade, All those are lateral moves. They were good lateral moves, but not significant enough to fix the teams problems. Domi for galch was a great trade, the team still has no number 1 centre.

Ok, I see where you are coming from, but I will get no more enjoyment out of them finishing in the 12-8 spot for the next 3 years than finishing dead last. As long as they are better later.

Explain to me what is a lateral move. A trade, by definition, implies a piece going in some way and another piece going the other way. So, are all trade not lateral ? The point here is that Bergevin made big move since he traded big pieces in his line-up to acquire big pieces from other team, which to me is quite the opposite of consevative.

He traded players with bad attitude for young veterans with a good attitude while rebuilding. So the young kids will have good mentor ( Weber Price Gallagher Danault Petry )
