There are maybe 5 players in the NHL I would trade Matthews for. Josi, while very good, is not one of them.

What if this was Johansen, Ellis for Matthews, Johnsson? Could maybe add a pick or piece or two to one or both sides to balance it out if deemed necessary.

The money would be a pretty much even swap, who would be the better team after the trade?

Okay but Ellis is a RHD, a bit younger I think and makes less than Josi so kind of checks the boxes for the Leafs more.

Josi is 29 turning 30 this June and will begin to decline in the next 2 years, this is one of the worst trades for Mathews ive seen, Josi not even worth Nylander, maybe Adreas for Josi is fair....
