Crazy idea for the draft in June if it happens

Description
The NHL wants to hold the draft in June (that may not happen as per recent reports). One of the reasons they want to do this is for attention and money during this time with little to no sports. Why on earth then would they reduce the lottery and make it more predictable. Why would you not but all teams in the lottery (obviously with varying odds). I know they said but what if someone wins the lottery and then wins the cup. To me that could be a good thing attention wise a bunch of places would cover it and the NHL would get a bunch of press. This format they are talking about is under the assumption that they do end up playing again which is not guaranteed.

So here is my idea for a June draft
You do it all LIVE and ALL teams are in the lottery. So before the pick the lottery ball is picked (using same lottery ball idea in the Crosby draft) then the team is on the clock for 4 minutes. This would just continue for the entire first round. This would make things a lot more crazy and much watch TV

Some teams(like PIT) don't own a first round pick. Does your idea give PIT a shot anyway and then if they didn't win they don't get a first round pick. A counter would be have a mini round between the first round and the second round where all the teams that don't have a pick get 1. placed for #1 overall lottery odds 2. if they don't win the lottery they get a selection here instead of their next pick--whatever that happens to be.

From what I've seen, the steam has been running low on the June draft hype so its probably not gonna happen. I think this would actually be a pretty exciting idea, but only include the non-playoff teams because in the event that Detroit, one of the worst teams in the expansion era, has the worst luck in the world and gets the last pick in the 1st round while St Louis gets Lafreniere, I dont have to explain how much **** the league would get for that. Another reason it might not be the greatest idea is because if you are in the 12-15 pick range, you have spent most of your time scouting those players and to win the lottery and have to decide which player you want to take 3rd overall without getting an interview and watching an in depth workout, that also takes away from that. So I think this idea works strictly for the teams that dont make the 24 team playoff, but the chaos would be hilarious

This is pretty unfair to all non-playoff teams. just make a hard cutoff for the playoffs and do a normal lottery with the 15 non playoff teams

Too much uncertainty, it would definitely get a lot of press, but not in a good way. A little bit of good attention is better than a lot of bad attention

This isn't fair to teams like Detroit who suffered all year just to have a cup team take lafreniere

The normal rules would still apply so Detroit would only be able to fall to 4th at the lowest

I am only in favour of an early draft if all teams get a shot at the lottery. involving every team in the draft lottery would be great $$ for the NHL. fans would tune in from every team to watch.
Even the best teams get a ball in the machine and have a sliver of hope. I might even lottery off the top-5 picks--but for the DET(historically bad) stack the odds ridiculously so they definitely 100% get a top-5 pick.

I think it would be a little too chaotic to the have the lottery and the draft on the same night. It would also be extremely hard for trades to occur.

I love the idea of involving all teams in the lottery even those that don't have a pick.
All teams could start out with 3 balls(maybe give DET 4) and subtract a ball for every playoff appearance or Draft lottery won in the past 4 years. I would love it.

If they have the draft in June there will be little trades anyways as teams can’t really trade players BUT I think this would cause more trades as let’s say a team like Florida gets the 7th pick and a teams like Minny wants holts but don’t know what Florida is going to do because Florida had been planning on getting pick 15 I think Minny is more likely to try and trade with Florida for the pick because they don’t know what they will do with that pick or where Minny will pick

Well Pit has a condition on the 1st so they would get to chose if they give this year or next years 1st

I think that it definitely would be interesting although if a team like Boston or St.Louis got Lafreniere that would be crazy... I think maybe add in a max amount you can climb? Like can climb to #3 but not #1...although that could decrease the viewership. As a sabres fan it would suck to drop 3 places and like worst case have like Tampa...Boston...and Toronto the top 3 picks...

people need to stop having "ideas"

One of the best parts about draft day is the trades. The NHL can't do trades unless they are willing to call the season.
This is the HUGE difference between the NFL and the NHL drafts if it was held in june.

But Minny could win the 8th pick couldn't they? Typical 1st round trades are for a decent player, or move back 5 spots because they are confident the player(s) they want will still be on the board. That would be impossible in this scenario.

Unless a team is given 30+ min to mull their options, there is no way a team has a mid first fall in their laps, touch base with enough teams to gauge value, and possibly make a move.

In a typical year, teams have been having conversations for months on what they could get if they move their first round picks and trades are not that common, I really doubt a trade will be dreamt up within minutes of finding out what pick a team gets.
