I've been thinking something along those lines makes sense for a while. Sens bet on Jost being better than he has been up to this point, and Colorado gets a really good 3C.

Is the difference between Tierney and Jost really that great though, especially considering their respective cap hits?

Also, in 2021/22 we have Newhook and Bowers on the way. Tierney at $3.75m might be a bit rich to pay a 4C. Playing with the idea though...

Tierney is a significant improvement from Tyson Jost at this stage of his career. He provides bottom six offense that Jost hasn't, and he's a strong PK guy and he's great in the dots.

Also as far as Newhook is concerned, he's at least one full season away from the NHL, possibly two if Colorado let's him develop in the AHL for a year. Tierney would definitely be a pretty expensive 4C, but he'd be a great one, and that cost is mitigating by having Newhook on an ELC. And if Colorado decides they don't want Tierney on the 4th line, they can just trade him, because he's a good player on a reasonable contract.

Thanks, makes sense.

Do you think $3.75m x 4 years works for Tierney? I'm a bit hesitant about going too long term due to Mackinnon & Byram's contracts in 2023. Tierney's offensive numbers will likely fall off if he's playing 3C/4C too which will impact his trade value at that stage.

The contract is probably in the right ballpark.

Also I'm not sure how big a concern there is with his production falling. He was a 3C in San Jose and put up 40 points, he was the 3rd line center in his first season in Ottawa and put up 48 points. This was pretty much the first season where he was an everyday 2C, and his production stayed roughly the same, despite facing easily the hardest defensive deployment of his career, getting nearly 60% Dzone starts 5v5

Kadri will be gone by then and/or newhook can play wing for a year if he pans out

I put together an AGM to see how it would play out with Tierney as 3C/4C. I quite like the idea now that I see the roster projection: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1739166

Tierney is a great stop gap for you guys. If C gets a bit congested, then his final year at 3.75 will be very movable for you guys as he will be 28, that third should be recoupable.

Thanks.

Is Jost + 3rd a fair trade for both sides? I figure that in Jost Ottawa would get a younger version of Tierney who fits the age of their team better.
