Not a panic move at all. Look what happened when we traded 3 years of Kadri for 1 year of Barrie.
Look at Arizona trading for Hall.

Arizona is a completely different story. They were a bubble team that wanted to finally get over the hump and who knows if they would have made it. TO is a playoff team and your idea limits or possibly even prevents them from contending.
The Kadri trade didn't pan out as well as we had hoped but to suggest that if we didn't make the trade that we'd be better off is silly.
1) Kadri wore out his welcome. Two years in a row he was suspended in the playoffs because he can't keep his cool.
2) Kerfoot never settled into the 3C role, but also was bounced all over the lineup and never really had an extended period of time with the same linemates, it's too early to judge him.
3) Image the Leafs Blueline without Barrie when Muzzin, Rielly and Ceci were all hurt. You would have had Dermott and Holl as your top pair with Marincin and Sandin the 2nd pair and Liljegren and Rosen as the 3rd pair. That is pretty much the AHL Blueline when they won the calder. Barrie wasn't a star in TO but he did a decent job when Keefe took over.
Now I imagine you think the Leafs should have traded, Bozak, JVR and Gardiner when they were in their FA years instead of losing them for nothing and I agree with that. That was a different time though, they were not contenders yet. They are now and burning a year is folly. Andersen is their best option in net for next season. Unless something crazy comes up, you ride with him and see what happens. The last thing you want is for this team to be terrific but with suspect goal tending. That can sap the confidence of the team and send you off a cliff real fast.
Rittich is not nearly as good as Andersen, this isn't a wise plan.
