Tierney 2021-22

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 19, 2020
Published: May 19, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this AGM Tierney is acquired in 2020 offseason.

An experienced but relatively young middle 6 center like Tierney would be useful for this team to help ease in Newhook and Bowers. We can afford the luxury of having Tierney at 4C in 21/22 due to Newhook and Bowers' ELC's. Tierney would get enough ice-time even as 4C due to playing on PP2 and PK1.

20/21: Kadri 2C ........... Tierney 3C....... Bellemare 4C
21/22: Kadri 2C .......... Newhook 3C .... Tierney 4C ... Bowers at 4th line LW.
22/23: Newhook 2C .... Tierney 3C ....... Bowers 4C

Tierney will likely get a Bonino-type deal. Bonino got $4.1m three years ago -- so you'd have to add a bit for inflation and probably sitting around $4.25m+ on a 4 year deal.

Wouldn't the flat cap counteract inflation though?

Also, do you think Jost + 2021 3rd is a fair trade for both sides?

Why would you put a guy making that much on the fourth line?

I think he still gets paid. If he goes to arbitration I think he'd easily get at least $4m as well. Just because there is a flat cap doesn't mean he is valued less and he could find many teams willing to pay in that aav neighborhood too (he's rfa, but just saying)

As far as the deal, I think they'd probably want a 2nd. But also depends on how much they like Jost.

As mentioned in the description above, Tierney would be getting time on PP2 and on PK1, which would get him enough minutes to be around his career average.

Our current 4C Bellemare averages 13:25 per game (11:02 at EV, and 2:05 on PK). Tierney would get at least the same amount of minutes at EV as Bellemare now (i.e. ~11:00 mins at EV), plus ~2:30 on PK1, and ~2:00 on PP2. That adds to 15:30, which is roughly equal to his career average of 15:15.

It would be a luxury to have Tierney as 4C for a season, but he'd be 3C in 20/21 and 22/23 onwards. Due to Newhook's ELC we can also afford the luxury of paying a bit extra for Tierney to be 4C one season.
