I would not pay a first for Petry as he could just be a rental. I would trade for a 2nd that becomes a 1st should he resign with the leafs and the leafs make the Stanley cup finals.

5mill for 2 years. No thank you. Thats alot of money for a short term deal. Leafs would rather target someone who will sign a 4-5 year deal or a cheap bridge deal.

Leafs do this. The third should be conditional if petry gets 40+ points

Dubas wouldnt do it as then how are we affording Hyman, Freddie, Rielly or even dermott. Dubas would rather sign a guy like Demelo or Gudas who will only cost 3.5-4 mill and will sign longer (4-5 years).

Petry's numbers have been elite for the past 3 seasons. He is worth 2 years 5 mil.
Demelo and Gudas aren't nearly as good as Petry

Sure but if we resign petry for that much we can kiss Hyman, Rielly, Dermott, Mikeyv, Sandin, Freddie goodbye. Gudas and Demelo sure are not as skilled but they would cost way less than petry and on a cash strapped team like the leafs they need all the room they can get.

Sadly, Iafallo is the kings “best” LW at this point, along with kempe. I know it’s bad. The value is I guess there, but he means more to the kings than a guy with a busted knee and and a 2nd.

Having a major knee injury is not something teams want. If you want value for him he needs to prove he can still be an effective player.

From my understanding San Jose is trading Hertl and Simek for #9 and half of Petry's salary. That's an awful deal for the Sharks

I guess the logic is that you have a decently strong chance in having a Johnsson coming off the injury and being his normal self, which is equal to Iafallo, at least. If he doesn't return to form, you have the 2nd rounder, which is a pretty good return for Iafallo on an expiring deal. You're rolling the dice a bit for next season, but the odds are in you favour, and you still have the future asset as well

What? Nick Robertson instead of the 1st rounder for Petry (who would now belong to SJ)? I think you've read the trade wrong.

You're getting MTL's first rounder (which should be around #10), and Petry, in exchange for Hertl and Simek.

You're then flipping Petry, retained at 50%, to TOR for our next year's first rounder, SDA, and a third

I understand the trade. I think the overall package is too weak for Hertl. I would want the montreal first plus a great prospect. Toronto first would be very late and SDA is not bad but not that impressive

MTL isnt looking to pay a premium for a center anymore. Hertle is good but they need skilled winger youth to develop with the centers they have in the system already. Danault and Domi are perfectly suitable top 6 centers till KK and Suzuki take over.

I can see the TOR trade needing more, but a #10 overall selection in a draft as deep as this AND petry (which gets you another late first + prospect) is more than plenty from Hertl in my opinion. that #10 could get you a guy like Lundell or Sanderson
