Description
I don’t know how I like this trade for the Leafs because I feel Klingberg isn’t the kind of defenseman the Leafs should target. He seems to be a pure offensive defenseman who needs to be sheltered whereas they need more of a shutdown minute eating guy. Looking at his basic stats, he’s decent. Has a shot for differential of 48%, scoring chance differential of 52% & high danger scoring chance differential of 54%. Corsi of 50%. He has an expected goals difference of 1.7, so overall he’s decent, but here’s the thing. He gets 60% of his starts in the offensive zone & this season ranks 47% below the league average percentile in overall defensive contribution this season. That’s worse than Tyson Barrie. So overall it’s not ideal to trade for him but it does clear up 6 million in cap to get someone else.

sorry but that is a no from the leafs. Klingberg hasn't been great defensively this year and is mainly an offensive defenseman. Which is something we don't need

You gotta remember as well that the current system that Dallas runs does not support Klingbergs game AT ALL. Throw him in Toronto and he’s easily putting up 70 points. He had put up 60 a few years ago. I personally think the value is fair. Yeah I believe Marner is the better player, but Klingbergs value is that cap. A true number one defensemen at that price is rare

This is true. He regressed defensively this season.

It would be Marner for Heiskanen not Marner for Klingberg if there was such a move.

Klingberg was better defensively last year finishing 14% above the league average percentile in overall career contributions. He’s mainly an offensive defenseman, but the benefit of this trade for Toronto is they open up cap space to bring in the shutdown RHD like Gudas or DeMelo or Weegar whom they will use for tough matchups. So technically, their defense could look like:

Muzzin-Gudas
Rielly-Klingberg
Lehtonen-Holl

Maybe a compliance buyout to fit in Marner.

The Stars believe that Miro Heiskanen is untouchable.

The article makes it quite clear that they are playing imagination; this is not a rumor. The Marner hypothetical had Heiskanen coming back. Shapiro said that Heiskanen is untouchable and the more interesting piece that Dallas could move (not specific to a Marner trade at all) is Klingberg.

Literally the first line: "While I doubt either Jim Nill or Dubas is contemplating anything of the sort, it seems we’ve already rocketed to Planet Make-Believe, so why not play pretend?"
Don't call it a rumor if it's "Planet Make-Believe".

Dubas pretty much fires himself if he moves Marner for two years of Klingberg. And Nill would have a very difficult time making the cap work. Pavs isn’t gonna pretend to be hurt to sit on LTIR til his contract is up

I went with the possibility of the cap going down & that they allow a CBO, that's why Pavelski is on LTIR.

CBO is looking very unlikely. I’d love to get Marner, but you’ll at the very least have to find somebody to take Rads. Toronto won’t take any additional cap in this trade cause the entire idea of it is they are giving up the better player in order to clear cap space. Without the cap space this trade isn’t even remotely thinkable. Even with the cap difference this looks bad from the Toronto side. I like the idea of a Klinger and Robertson for Nylander and Liljegren trade a lot personally. Or just Klinger for Kapanen and Liljegren. I feel like Johns would be a very good fit for what they need, but his value isn’t high enough that trading him makes sense

No way that works in a cap world. Assuming Nill shopping Miro was even a remote possibility, the asset(s) coming back would have to be as young and cost controlled as Miro. So Marner and his fat juicy contract doesn’t work unless other pieces are involved

Stephen Johns is 19% above the league average percentile in overall defensive contribution, he's big & can move the puck. He'd be a pretty good option no doubt. I think Toronto will end up going after DeMelo or Weegar, since they don't have much cap to work with.

As a closet Toronto fan I’d like to see them grab Melo

Agree he’d be a good option. Good defensively & eats minutes.

Klingberg would do wonders next to Muzzin. But Toronto should seriously consider a trade around Marner/Klingberg cause that defensive group is Stanley Cup worthy

Not a single chance dude. A 20 yr old number 1 defensemen is way more valuable than a 22 yr top line winger
