Defense or Goalie

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: May 22, 2020
Published: May 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With a flat cap and no CBO, the Canucks will only have enough cap space to strengthen one area of the ice; goalie, D or forward. I think the forward group is probably where they're strongest, it really comes down to whether;

1) they re-sign Markstrom and take their chances with cheap depth Dmen (Fantenberg, Tryamkin types) and Utica call-ups (Rafferty, Juolevi, etc.), or
2) try to sign a decent top 4 defensive Dman and use the remaining space to get a good veteran backup goalie to split duties with Demko.

Either way they'll be leaving one of these positions likely weaker than last year, unless there's a big development jump from Demko or the young Dmen. I've laid out two options below in the IR and LTIR; if you're Benning which path would you take?

Is it an overpay? He isn't subject to the entry level contract maximum anymore, and he can make a fair bit in Russia. I'll be curious what the number is if he does sign.

If they can get him for 1 year at 900k or less then they absolutely should, there's zero risk in it.

He's a 7th defenseman on most every NHL team. All he brings is size with a game that is otherwise quite flawed. His stats show he has hardly improved if at all in his years in russia. Now that Vancouver has Myers, he isn't really a need.

I'd give him 1M for 1 year maximum, and most preferably less than that. Any more is an overpay that would hurt our franchise.

Play Demko-Mark as 1A/1B at least until TDL...
* Posted this on another Canuck post today = "Trading Demko is not wise (think TML 2006 and Raycroft for Rask trade; hmmm how'd that work out again...) ??"

Fair enough, then back to the main question if you sub in a different depth Dman for 1.5 x 1 yr; which UFA path do you choose? Marky or strengthen the blueline?

So you're in favor of re-signing Markstrom rather than a top 4 Dman then?

No, not really...I think Mark will be too old when VAN is in the playoff sweetspot provided hopefully by new kids on the block in QH-EP...
I'd lean toward 27yr old Demelo and G-Man Anton (or similar 'stop-gap') and see if Demko is ready?
If (big IF) Demko pans out - VAN has 3 critical, young, core pieces "up the middle" as per 99% of CUP teams!
