It's a nice package for Hischier, but it would really leave Devils with little NHL experience in the top 6. I'm guessing Devils will pass but I am interested to here from Devils fans on this one.
On the other hand it really helps Sabres take a step forward.

This is a massive over payment by BUF. I get Nico's not exactly getting a ton of help, but it really feels like you're trading for his draft status.

Buffalo would never offer that. Potentially two players that could be as good or better and would be cost controlled for a while, a 3C and a 2D.
Also, not leaving enough money to sign our RFAs looking for big raises next summer.

this is an overpay, but its probably what it would take. I'd rather have cozens + Rossi/Raymond than Hischier.

tough trade to assess, don't think NJ is going to move on from Hischier anytime soon. if he develops into a 70 point two-way centerman like he's expected to NJ look like idiots unless Cozens is unreal and they hit huge on the 7th pick. Just no need for NJ to consider this really

I would give up the 2020 1st, Mittelstadt, Montour certainly not Cozens but that's probably not enough

Sabres jump on this. Do what you've gotta do to get your long term top line center to be your #2. You've gotta give eichel the team around him that he deserves soon, or he's gonna leave as an FA. Hischier is gonna blossom to be a 70pt+ center, and when he does, his contract, and deal will look great. Devils, on the other hand, might be reluctant to trade their future #1C. Good offer though, they definitely think it over

Eichel is signed for 6 more years so won't be a FA any time soon. Also this roster leaves about 8 million for 21-22 season with Dahlin, Jokiharju and two wingers left to sign

Ya but you wait another 3 years for some prospects to *maybe* pan out and then best case scenario you have a 3 year window where you have a good enough team to make the playoffs to prove to jack that the team won't continue to fail him, or worst case the hyped up prospects aren't what you think they are and you fail him completely

If they cannot become a contender in 3-4 years it is time to blow it up and start over again. If they are good for one year and then get worse every year after that because they have no cap to retain their good players Eichel would want to leave at that point too.

I see your point, but this is more like a Murray trade.
Montour had the best +/- among all Buffalo Sabre defense-men.
Cozens appears to be only a year away,
The 7th round pick is projected to be another Cozens or better.
All this for center who broke 50 pts once in his career.
If I were the Sabres HC. I would try Sam at center with Jeff. Sam is a very good passer, creates traffic in front of the net and seems to be a team player.
Olofsson - Eichel - Thompson
Johansson - Reinhart - Skinner
Free Agent/Mittelstadt - Kahun - Okposo
Girgensons - Larsson - Lazar
I know I am in the minority but IMO Thompson is ready.

Who says this can't be Cozens or their 1st round pick this year? 70 point center? Maybe. Let's see him get back to 47 first.

I'm not saying he can't be down the line, but how much time do you really have left to wait until he develops into that? And what if he's middlestadt 2.0? Then what? Best case scenario you wait a couple years for Cozens to be your 2C and you've only got like 3 years to prove to jack that you're gonna be a playoff team and worth staying for, or these prospects that you're so heavily relying on aren't what you think they are and you waste all 6 years of eichel. Something's gotta change. Either way you're gonna waste to much of Eichel's prime years, and he'll leave you because of it. You've gotta do what you've gotta do to get your reliable #2C, whether you think that's hischier or someone else.

If you don't want hischier, thats fine. I think he'd blossom if he got to (a) play under jack and (b) have some good line mates, but you can use this package for someone you think is better. Regardless, you've gotta do something because before you know it, you'll have wasted the Eichel contract

yeah really just need one other line to have decent offensive contribution and Skinner-Hischier-Reinhart is a very solid L2 if you ask me....add in a good backup in Khudobin to replace Hutton who cost us at least 7 wins this season and the team is significantly improved IMO

and that's exactly why NJ probably has no interest in moving him
