An off-season story

Created by: Kyle_Davidson
Team: 2020-21 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: May 21, 2020
Published: May 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NHL decides to postpone draft due to a plan to play being approved by all parties, play begins in the last week of July.

Chicago plays EDM in a best of 5 series and lose in that series 3 games to 2.

The NHL (rightfully) decides that the draft lottery should include the teams that lost in the play in round. It is the only fair way of doing things, considering many of the lower seeds in these play in rounds were not likely to make the playoffs in the first place, and should not be punished for the circumstances.

Chicago wins the draft lottery (1st overall), (this is revealed during the second round of the traditional 16 team playoff) (they have the 9th best odds to do so)

(Playoffs end controversially, because of course they do.)

Chicago resigns Strome for 3 years at 4AAV

Chicago resigns Kubalik for 2 years at 3.250 AAV.

Chicago signs Drake Caggulia for 1 year at 1.5 AAV.

Chicago Resigns Crawford for 1 year at 4AAV

Shaw unofficially retires and we get access to his LTIR money.

At the draft we select Laferniere… he starts the next season.

At the draft Blackhawks trade Olli Maatta and a 4th round pick in 2020 to the jets for a 3rd round pick in 2021. This pick was conditionally included in the Cody Eakin trade, depending on if they resign him prior to next season (and make the round of 16), the pick may be pushed back to 2022. If this is the case, the Blackhawks also get WPG’s 5th round pick in 2021.

Start of the season

Season starts January of 2021, Seabrook is fully healed from his injuries and ready to play. This creates an obvious problem with us having Boqvist, Mitchell, and Murphy in the lineup. This can be solved in a couple of different ways, the first being stashing Mitchell in the AHL until Seabs earns a scratch, trading Murphy/letting him play left side..., or CBO’ing Seabrook in the off-season if that should be an option.

odds chicago wins a top 3 pick.....high.
They can't allow one of their largest markets to be a bottom feeder team forever.

I disagree. The lottery gets suspended for just this season picks 1-7 go by record and then the rest of the teams are added as they are knocked out.

I think they probably do a lottery for the bottom 5, or atleast that was what they discussed with the idea of a June draft. I think thats fair, but honestly if any team deserves lafreniere its detroit. Big market, original 6 team, I think there's a high chance the league lets them get Lafreniere

If they go with a smaller lottery I think they have to include all 7 teams not in the playoffs. I could totally see that happening.

I doubt that the nhl skips the draft lottery

Going to the old format for one season is the fairest way to do it.

You can't do the draft lottery, Seeing that the rest of the schedule has been scrubbed. The CBA states that the entire 82 game season has to be played in it's entirety to have a draft lottery.

Not necessarily, They can still do bottom 5 for the #1 overall, And where New Jersey and Buffalo can only climb 4 spots respectively to #2 and #3 overall.

Why can’t people write « Lafrenière » correctly?

Why would they do the bottom 5 versus the 7 teams that aren't in the playoffs? Those 7 teams were mathmatically out which is why they are doing a 24 team playoff...MTL and Hawks still had a chance mathmatically to make it. Although we know a bigger reason why MTL and Hawks were included...revenues....2 of the top 5 biggest revenue teams.

Give Kubalik a 1 yeat prove it deal instead of a two year deal. Caggiula probably gets around 2-2.5 on next deal

With Cag’s injury history this year, combined with a flat cap, I see him on a 1 year prove it contract.

Realistically, the Hawks pick anywhere from 8 to 10 given they are going to the playoffs. Given that AF, Byfield, Stutzle, and Drysdale go 1 through 4, I would sure hope they can get a shot at grabbing Perfetti, Rossi, Holtz, or Raymond....if they grab any of those 4 I'll be extremely happy. If they get Lundell I won't be upset either as it still would be "okay". If they grab a true center, that means Strome is likely gone in a year or two max and maybe as soon as right away.

I agree Cag should be on a 1 year deal, but at 2-2.5 million rather than 1.5 million

He won't get more then $2m and I'm betting $1.75m. That said, if Shaw is going to play, then I bet they trade Caggs's rights.

This would be great, but what will happen is the hawks beat the Oilers just to get blown out by the stars (or whoever they play) in the first round and edmonton wins the lottery and gets laf
