Was Tavares Signing a Mistake

Created by: ALjet12
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 24, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I am not a Leaf's fan.
Looking at the Leaf's salary cap situation for the next few years, was Tavares signing a mistake.
The leafs have four star player's making over 40 million dollars, that is almost 50 % of their cap. They have a piss pour defense and a aging star goaltender that has to play 60+ games a year( which teams are moving away from ) He also on his last year of his contract on 2020 and he sure will get a raise. The team has a number one defensemen in Rielly and a solid defensive second line defensemen in Muzzin. Tyson Barrie will mostly not return next year and leafs got nothing for him at TDL. There rookies on defense are too young to make an impact , they need more time to develop. Tavarse had a monster of season in 2019 put up fans tactic numbers but down the line three years later I see the Leafs regretting that contract. We saw it with the Blackhawks with Toews and Kane. You just can not win just a few players making the majority of the cap, financial sacrifices have to be made.
PS: they should trade Nylander

people really need to stop asking that question. Sure his cap hit is a bother but he is an elite center who can has been stellar for the leafs in his 2 years with them. Consistent center who can get 65-85 points. Can pp, and lead the team when required. Overall he is a welcomed member and the fact he took less money to come is an added bonus.

Will he get 65-85 points when he's 35? Will he be worth 11M when he's 35? IMO the length was too long

Leaf fans will never admit it but IMO it was. Signing Tavaras essentially lead to tanking the value of their best contract on the team (Kadri) then trading him for rentals to fix their 1 gaping hole that was there before the JT signing. Tavares is fantastic player and a great leader but he was the opposite of what the team needed the most. Maybe mistake is the wrong word, its more like the logic behind the signing is fundamentally flawed

1000% it was a mistake, the Leafs had the cheapest 2C in the already in Kadri on a great contract so if they just keep him and spend some of that Tavares money elsewhere they'd have a better more balanced lineup.

If they don't sign Tavares they would of had the cap flexibility to just ride out the last year of Marleaus contract instead of giving up a 1st round pick in a good draft to move him.

No doubt Tavares is a great player but it wasn't a good signing, simply put it was unnecessary and is a big part of why they're in such a cap crunch now.

No, you don't get it. Getting Tavares for free as UFA even at 11m was NOT a mistake. Leafs management mistake was signing Nylander/Matthews /Marner to 5m over going rate for the term that got.
Other Leaf options. Sign Tavares. Let's say they need 7m to fill a roster spot. They could traded Matthews for the equivalent of 4 first rounders and had the cap space for a 7m DMan
Signing UFAs at a fair or even somewhat about the going $$$$ is OK, if you have the ability to trade other players for good value either for need or to get cap space.

They should of built the team like Colorado let their young players develop and buy free agents on a discount for essential needs. Tavares is complementary not essential. His contract is overrated when he signed , should of been 9 million for 7 years

If he stays healthy and plays well I dont see why not. Look at Bergeron, Kopitar, Malkin, etc. All in their 30's and all still playing excellent at the center role. Sure the production has dropped but with his skills and play style he will probs stay at 60 points

Thats not worth 11 though, bergeron makes <7, crosby <9, kopitar 10 but he got paid recently, but LA has cap to spare now

Honestly I would have just let Columbus offersheet marner. 4 first would have came back letting toronto have so much leverage in trades + they could have kept Marleau, had 2 first for 2020 and used them in trades

I think so. They already had two great Centers to play in their top-6 and had an obvious need at D. Without Tavares, there’s less drama with Nylander and Marner, which seemed to negatively affect them in the seasons after their respective holdouts. They would’ve had more freedom in looking for and retaining quality defensemen. Maybe they keep a guy like Bozak or Van Reimsdyk, which helps with their depth down the lineup.

It’s really hard to call acquiring a player like Tavares a mistake just because of the impact he can have on a franchise and I don’t know if that’s what I’d classify him as. But I do think that the money he’s being paid by the Leafs could’ve been better spent. I know Leafs fans won’t like hearing that, but that’s my opinion

The reason why they signed Marner for over 10 milliion was because he looked at what his teamates were getting an want to match it . When you sign one star player for one contract the other star players want to match it or succeed it. Marner is not 10 million because he is a winger who benefited off of Tarvarse . Parnarin is worth 11.6 because he played with less skilled payers in Colombus. Mathews is a good signing because he is a number one center who if they waited they would have to fear Arizona coming in an taking
him

if he plays well, keeps his faceoff win % high, and helps out robertson and Nylander to make big plays and generate points, sure. By the time he starts to slow down at 35 11mill will be nothing as players of his caliber will be making 12-15mill.

Interesting thought. The Leafs would have four first rounders from Columbus, and they would have kept their own first rounder from the Marleau to Carolina (necessary) fiasco. But also the Leafs would had almost 11m in cap starting this year for five years in total Gee, five first rounders and Pietrangelo for Marner. I'd take that.

Leafs fans never give legit reasons of how they can fix their defense under this current situation because is extremely difficult to do Leafs have a 2 year window for the cup

I don't think it was a mistake. I think the kadri trade was terrible, they should have used kadri to acquire a RD with term that could play defense.

I understand the concept of a team "taking him'. But while the compensation would be four first rounders from Arizona , the other benefit the Leafs would have is 11.6m that spend on other player(s) besides Matthews. They would have the choice of any premier UFA or two good UFA...plus kept those four first rounders. I just think that in some cases, not matching an offer is the best value a team could do.
And just my opinion. No way Matthews wants to play for such an insignificant NHL team as Phoenix. He wants (and will) sign with a big US market .

As Hawks fans, we are kinda spoiled when it comes to this kinda thing. The only reason Hossa's cap hit was as low as it was is because they could toss on as many years as they wanted and that would lower the AAV, so now that that isnt available, the FA superstars sign for a ridiculous cap hit that ruins any chance of the team being able to keep depth guys around for more than a year or 2
