Keeping Barrie

Created by: MitchMarner_16
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2020
Published: May 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hypothetically, the cap goes up by 2.5 million this year, and then 1.5 for the next 2. this will help keep salaries steady, and going in an upward trend.
2020-2021 - $84,000,000
2021-2022 - $85,500,000
2022-2023 - $87,000,000

I honestly think Toronto should sign Tyson Barrie to a one-year, 'prove yourself' deal, before either letting him walk or signing him long-term. I gave him almost the Murphy AAV, because that's what i think he was worth after this year. People hate on him, but while he had a downish year, he really helped carry the load while rielly was hurt. Barrie THRIVED under Keefe, who played him under his strengths, and utilized him for the player he was, not who he wasn't. I think that's why Barrie had a slow start. Because Babs was using Barrie in a way that he wasn't comfortable with, and when Babcock was fired, Tyson heated up. Barrie ended up scoring 32 of his 39 pts under sheldon Keefe, and i think the leafs should give him a full season under Keefe and see how it goes. load up the contract with performance bonuses. He has shown some interest in staying in Toronto.

Chicago trade:
Kapanen, 4th = Murphy
2nd, Kossila = Nylander

Cap isn't going up, Hawks aren't moving Nylander after they moved Joki for him, they need to see what he can do. Barrie doesn't sign that, I think Mikheyev gets 1 more year or a bit less money, Dermott doesn't get traded

Barrie will get way more than that. He isn't what the Leafs need anyways.

Hawks decline without hesitation.

The Leafs cannot afford Clifford for that salary. He will get more as a UFA.

Expecting the cap to go that high is a HUGE misstep IMO.

Different players, I'd take Barrie if they were the same caphit cause we wouldn't have to give up any assets for him but as a UFA teams will pay him much more plus he said he wanted 8x8

One of those players is a turnstyle/absolute handicap on defense. and if you think points is the only metric in hockey...go trade for Pekka Rinne, he scored a goal last year.....

You have Murphy as a top pair Dman and Barrie as a bottom pair Dman. I know you asked the question, but you also answered it with this post.

You do know that Barrie and his agent have a little bit of say in his contract negotiations right? He's a UFA. You don't think a single other team out there will top that offer?

Additionally, the fact you don't know how performance bonuses work, makes it tough to trust your viewpoint here.

Barrie doesnt have much to prove, hes really good. Dubas f*cked up the Kadri trade since day 1. If you trade a player of Kadri's caliber trade him for dman that would fix Toronto's issues, not making them worse.. Barrie can put up points but he cant defend lol

Day 1 is kind of pushing it, considering Kadri vetoed a trade to Calgary.

Most people agreed Muzzin/Barrie pairing had very high potential, then if Ceci could at least be Hainsey level and pair with Rielly then it's a decent top 4.

Neither of those things happened, making it a bit of cluster**** throughout the year, only made worse by all the injuries.
