Expansion Protection

Created by: DLussier
Team: 2020-21 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2020
Published: May 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ok so taking into consideration the expansion draft.

Anyone who's contract expires 2021, does not need to be protected as they will be a FA during the draft. Also the team needs to expose 1 defenseman and 2 forwards under contract through 21/22.

Nordstrom is signed to a 2 year deal to join Wagner as the 2 forwards to fill this requirement and Moore fills the need for defenseman.

Krug has stated he wants to stay with the Bruins and be a face of the franchise. Sweeney needs to sweet talk him into a 1 year deal with the promise of more money and max term the year after. To help entice him, Sweeny should play up the fact that the US TV rights will be coming in that year and there should be a significant upward movement in cap space. This would make Krug not have to be protected in the expansion draft allowing the B's to protect Carlo, Lauzon, and Gryz as their 3 defensemen.

Krejci get's move in the final year of his deal. It's obvious he is not going to come back. They do not need an aging second line player, no matter how decent he is, especially at the money value he will be commanding.

Time to move on from Chara, they can offer him the same money he'd play for to be a bench/conditioning coach. Which is where his value really is. Leadership!!

Debrusk I'm wrapping up long term now before the TV oney comes in. I see him being a part of the future of this team and anything short term only leads to a bigger contract in 2-3 years.

Senyshen gets qualified. Any offer sheets up to $1,395,053 are matched. Anything over that you let him go for draft pick compensation.

Zobril get's qualified. See Senyshen comments.

That's way too much for Krejci. Ottawa would never do that

Norris projects to be a roughly comparable player as Krejci, and JBD is a potential top 4 defensive RD.

This is a horrible idea for Ottawa

You should know that both Senyshyn and Zobril will need to go through waivers for the first time next season. Its use em or lose em time.

That's fine, tweak the trade. I was only throwing something together. I didn't expect it to be perfect.

Too many changes for a 100pt team - "if the spoke ain't broke, don't fix it"

* You've committed almost US$5M to two mucker-grinders that are already in the B's system and at entry-level pay grade (let Nordy go (overpay as well) and No Z.G., just load up Studnicka instead).
* Chara will be back = still plays over 21min per gm, #2 PK in league largely due to Zee-Carlo pairing.
* Krug's agent won't take that deal - an injury (which he's had a few) and he's eating Wonder bread when he's 60.
* OTT declines.

There isn't a tweak to make that would satisfy both teams. Ottawa wouldn't pay a price that makes sense for Boston

laugh laugh Fat chance that Krug would accept a one year $7 million offer from Boston. He'd easily get a 6 x 7.5m or 7 x 7.5m from home town Detroit. Yzerman wants him badly and is willing to overpay for him. And he and his agent know that.

I’m starting to come to the realization that Krug likely isn’t coming back. With the deal that pasta took and the player he’s become I can’t see Sweeney and co ponying up for Krug unless he will settle for a number around Pastas contract. Pasta and Marchy have set the tone for pending UFAs in Boston. And what they’ve settled for is great for the organization but it’s going to cost the bruins players if they aren’t as willing to buy into the system

So this has some major major issues. I’m likely to miss a few, because conceptually you seem to be going about this the wrong way. This is a Stanley cup contender that does not have a huge window with this group. It seems like you’re not acknowledging that.
The Krejci trade
- he has some no trade protection. 0.0% chance he waives for Ottawa. 0.0% chance Ottawa wants him.
-The last season the NHL completed he had over 70 points, and was the 2nd center for a team that went to game 7 of the Stanley cup final. Why are they trading such important players?
-Norris is a solid prospect. You know who isn’t trading top 6 forwards for prospects? Stanley cup contenders.
-I don’t know why you say it’s obvious he is not coming back. There is literally nothing about what has happened that makes this obvious.

The Krug deal
-It’s just not a real life concept. They’ll sign him to a normal deal.

Girgensons
-i just don’t know what on earth you were thinking here.

Studnicka
-should be on the team. Oh, that’s a good way to get rid of girgensons

Nordstrom
- I’m not sure you’re thinking of the right player here. Offering him 2.6 million is utterly preposterous.

Chara
-incredibly important role for the team. He’ll be back. Another one year deal if he wants to continue playing.

The RFAs
-Grzelcyk will need more for that term.
-Bjork isn’t going to sign for three years. That would be really limiting his earning power.

The expansion draft:
-I think your information regarding free agents and protection is incorrect. That would mark a major change from last time around.
-They would DEFINITELY protect mcavoy over freaking lauzon.

I just can’t really see how the conversation goes:
“Hey Torey, listen, you’ve been awesome for us. But here’s the thing, there’s this guy on the team that signed as a restricted free agent before he broke out. Ya, he signed when he was 21, heck of a player, and I managed to lock him up before anyone knew how good he was. Great deal. He’s only the third highest paid player on the team! Ya, i know your unrestricted and play a different position and are a different age, but I really can’t give you more money than him. Sorry.”

Like, what?

I gotta agree here: too many changes. Krejci has one year left, they will just let this year die out.
Bruins also have Studnicka ready to play NHL hockey so no reason to sign Zemgus.
The trade value is fine (ignore the sens fans undervaluing Krejci), but it doesnt happen needs wise for either team (sen dont wanna give up prospects to get older)

Good RFA deals
Nordstrom doesnt come back (and if he does, its for 1.25 tops)

Overall: idk, its like very 50/50 but keep up the good work i suppose

Both players bring pretty much the same thing to the table for the team. Offense. You may value Krugs offense more because he's a dman and I can understand that. And you're right that Pasta's situation was different because he was a RFA, which I did forget about, so it does change things compared to Krugs scenario. But nonetheless top core priority players have taken money that is under their market value. I just don't see Sweeney signing Krug if he's commanding in the mid 7s. I think he's an important piece of this team but looking at Krugs numbers he's been relatively the same player production wise since signing his last contract. His defense has improved but is that enough to demand a $2-2.5M raise? I don't really think so. I'll probably end up wrong in the end and we'll see Krug sign a 7ishx6 deal but its just my opinion.

I’m just going to use some extreme examples to illustrate my point. Let’s say that Bjork signs a 2 year extension at 1.25 million. Then he blows up. Leads the league in scoring for some reason. Next year, in negotiations, is Sweeney going to say to, i don’t know, Carlo, “hey man, sorry, i can’t get give you more than Bjork. The guy just led the league in goals for 1.25! You can’t ask for more than that!” Young players sign long term deals and then drastically improve, bringing their deal to way below market value. All the time. It shouldn’t have any effect on any contract negotiation. If Pasta were a UFA right now he would be getting over 11

I understand what you're saying I do. I just don't value Krug at the number that the market is setting him at, which I think why Sweeney wont sign him to a deal that would carry a cap more than Pasta/Marchy. I probably worded it like an idiot in my original comment because I was just going off the grip without really thinking about how I was saying what I was saying. I'm not trying to say you're wrong at all, its just my opinion on the situation.
