If RNH decides not to resign in Edmonton, what do you think he will return in a trade - considering the likely flat cap and that he's a pending UFA?

I think COL is getting fleeced here. RNH is a fine player, but he's not Taylor Hall in any universe. 1 year for RNH isn't worth this package...yes I saw the conditional part too.

What's a fair trade in your opinion?

I'd drop Zadarov. I'm not saying he's going to be a Norris candidate, but a 25 yr old, 6'6", 235 lb Dman is going to be VERY useful in the playoffs. He's an RFA and arbitration eligible so he'll be cost controlled next year too.

I'd also drop Kamenev, BUT conditional extensions (I think) tend to be a bit more expensive. That conditional I'd raise to another 1st. IF COL truly benefits that much from RNH then a LATE 1st shouldn't be too much to give up for an agreed upon (would have to be if extended) 27 - ~33 RNH.

So you think a 1st + Jost is a fair trade? With an additional 1st if he resigns?

A younger replacement center (doesnt have to be as good as RNH...because why trade for him if he was) and a 1st. Sounds about right to me.

I'm not sure I follow, can you list the pieces instead of doing //// between them. I can't tell which ones are "AND" and which ones are "OR"

I would do Jost + Bowers + 1st + Cole/Zadorov if RNH came with a ~$6.5m x 6 year extension.

RNH has already earned over $38m so far in his career, mostly playing on losing teams. I could certainly see him entertaining the idea of taking a slight discount to play on one of the top contenders, and the difference between $6.5m and $7m is really 'only' $3m over the course of a 6 year contract ($39m versus $42m).

What are Edmonton's biggest needs right now?

I thought a big physical LHD and a couple of young 3rd liners with upside would be useful given Edmonton's general lack of good depth. Jost is talented enough to score on the wing with Drai or McD, and Kamenev would be a useful bottom 6 C.
