Description
My team is the Hawks, but this could be any of the teams 16-24. ONE of them will surprise. upsets happen all the time in hockey. it's part of what makes this sports so great. BUT it doesn't feel right to me to still be allowed into the lottery. Imagine ANY of the teams 16-24 actually making it into a conference finals game. What happens to their pick? What happens if they won the lottery?!?!

Any team that moves past the play in isn't in the lottery.

Oh, I hadn't seen that! Thanks I thought the lottery was before the playoffs?

You get into the playoffs, You lose your lottery bid. It's one or the other not both.

It's still a weird system. Like the Leafs or the Penguins or a number of good teams could win a lottery. Doesn't seem right to me but then again, it doesn't seem right to make those teams play their way into the playoffs when they were sitting in a spot.

So they will be doing two phases to the lottery.
Phase 1: before the playoffs with the seven teams that are not going to be playing. Placeholder teams will be left for the 8 teams that have yet to lose in the qualifying round. So lets say Detroit wins the first pick, and Ottawa the second pick. Now lets say a place holder team gets drawn for the 3rd pick, this is where it gets interesting.

Phase 2: If a placeholder team ends up winning the lottery (For any of the picks but lets say 3rd overall here) then that means only the 8 teams that lost in the qualifying round will be able to have a chance at 3rd overall. All of those 8 teams will have 1 in 8 odds to win the pick

Technically it’s not, but it is best of 5 (someone tell me if I’m wrong) to see who can make it to the second round for some teams. I believe the only teams that don’t have to do the best of 5 is the teams with the highest point %. I think there automatically in the playoffs and they will just have to wait for the other teams to come into it.

The lottery is before the playoffs, but there's a placeholder in the lottery (named teams a-h) for the 8 teams that end up losing the play in. Then if one of the teams (A-H) wins a top three pick, there will be a second lottery to determine which of the 8 teams that missed get that pick. In the second lottery all teams have the same odds.

IMO the Leafs area going to win the Cup this year. The NHL will implement the Covid rule. No touching another player, gotta stay six feet away from all players. Leafs "skill" rule the day.

Funny enough, the language Bettman used during his explanation was a little different. According to him, the bottom 8 of each conference are in a “qualifying round” and whoever wins those matchups advance to the “first round” of the playoffs. At least I’m pretty sure that’s the words he used.

If so, is a qualifying round counted towards a playoff berth?

I wouldn’t know, I didn’t see what Bettman said. I think the qualifying round is just to see who is in the playoffs, then we will see from there on what is going to happen.

The only team that doesn’t have any shot at the lottery are the Boston, Tampa, Philadelphia, Washington, St louis, Colorado Vegas and Edmonton since they are the 8 best seed and are sure to make it to the second round. The lottery will have the 15 team that isnt in the playoff second round.

That's not correct. They will hold the lottery for teams 1-7 and the remaining lottery seats will be handed out based on who exits from the playoffs first. The remaining teams will be assigned their number based on what NBC is reporting and they will enter into the second lottery

Sorry, was addressed after your comment

NHL is still listing the odds as overall different...and saying based on the losing teams their odds will be assigned based on a regular season record.

Detroit Red Wings -- (.275) 18.5 percent chance for No. 1 pick
Ottawa Senators -- (.437) 13.5 percent
Ottawa Senators (from San Jose Sharks, .450) -- 11.5 percent
Los Angeles Kings -- (.457) 9.5 percent
Anaheim Ducks -- (.472) 8.5 percent
New Jersey Devils -- (.493) 7.5 percent
Buffalo Sabres -- (.493) 6.5 percent

Qualifying Round Team A -- 6.0 percent
Qualifying Round Team B -- 5.0 percent
Qualifying Round Team C -- 3.5 percent
Qualifying Round Team D -- 3.0 percent
Qualifying Round Team E -- 2.5 percent
Qualifying Round Team F -- 2.0 percent
Qualifying Round Team G -- 1.5 percent
Qualifying Round Team H -- 1.0 percent

So in theory, for example, if MTL wins and the Blackhawks lose in the qualifying round, the Blackhawks would be team A instead of B if both MTL and CHI loses.

I will be a Oilers and Canadians fan during the qualifying round!
