5th round pick moves back to a 7th if klingberg doesn't resign. this trade happens in a scenario where Dallas really likes a prospect around the 10-14 range and don't think they can resign klingberg

I was gonna come in arms flailing with a whole bunch of reasons why I didn't like this. Then you answered them all below. I think it's reasonable to like a prospect in that range also. I'm gonna say under those conditions, yes. Except instead of the 5th 7th thing, NJ needs to have a contract set up before the deal. They're not in the market for rentals. If Dallas can't work something out they just let the other two negotiate and have the trade in place.

The biggest issue with the Stars trading Klingberg at all is that Stephen Johns then becomes their only legitimate NHL quality RD in the entire organization. Fedun is a fringe-NHL player, but outside of those two the Stars have Joe Cecconi, Reese Scarlett, & Jakob Stenqvist as the only remaining RD's in their organization and none of them are any more than career AHL defensemen. The only way I could even remotely see Dallas moving Klingberg is if they got another NHL caliber RD in return.

like i said though, this only happens in a scenario where dallas sees no way to resign klingberg and want to get anything they can in return

ari 1st pick is far from a guarentee.. woods is a pretty valuable depth guy .. from NJ point of view i think a guarenteed trade and sign and zacha instead of wood would be a nice deal .. but if they get ari 1st pick i think they should take askarov as future 1a if they follow the same path TB did with vas .. i think that will be much move valuable move. they are 3-4 yr out with winger depth and this could be a important draft for them ..
