take aways from botts press conference

Created by: chloewoj
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 27, 2020
Published: May 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- wayne simmonds will most likely be back next year
- rasmus ristolainen isn't going anywhere
- the first round pick may be moved
- casey mittelstadt/tage thompson have a high chance of being on the roster next season
- he couldn't commit to signing sam reinhart long term
- he sounded like he wants to part ways with hutton
- sounded like dylan cozens will be on the roster next year
- the sabres haven't talked about clear cut contracts negotiations with their free agents yet but they've been in contact with their agents
- jason botterill emphasized the importance of improving the penalty kill and depth scoring
- said the struggles were strong after sweden (which everyone already knew)
- looking at trades and free agency to fix most problems
- really focused on the young players in the system (specifically TT, CM, and DC
- classified the core of the team as jack eichel, sam reinhart, rasmus ristolainen, and rasmus dahlin (no skinner which is weird)
- waiting to hear about the definite cap situation before making trades and signing free agents
- we're still going to suck next year for sure because he only focuses on the future rather than the present

with all that being said...i still think he has no idea what he's doing
- if you could make one dream trade or free agent signing this year...what would it be?
- what young players do you want to see on the roster next seaosn?

I don't like the Sabres, but even I felt bad seeing him name Ristolainen as a core player. That's tough

I am okay with idea of youngsters, but If all three are in buffalo, there’s a good chance we move up in the standings. This team desperately needs another nhl-caliber center

we move up in the standings? if all three are in the lineup we're sliding down the standings.

I am not a fan of Botts, but I think the comments about Risto are for 2 reasons. 1 - He is letting other GM's know that he will not give Risto away if he does not feel he is offered fair value for him. 2 - If he is unable to move Risto he can always claim he never really wanted to. As far as Reino goes, if he is not willing to commit long term to him then he may need to move him even though he named him as a core piece. He is already coming off of a bridge deal that he greatly outperformed. I cannot see him being happy to come back on another bridge deal.

i honestly feel like botts wants to bring reino back on a long term deal but the jeff skinner contract has instilled so much fear in him that he's not willing to take the risk of signing another player to a large contract and have it blow up in his face again. i feel like most people won't agree with me on this take but it's my opinion on the whole reino situation.

That may be true but I think you might end up with a situation like Nylander in Toronto where Reino may hold out if he is offered another bridge deal and even if he does accept you are walking him right into free agency then.

Oops sorry, we don’t move up. Cozens I thunk is a lock, and maybe one of the other two. If all three make it, yikes

@SalamiCheese
I agree, I do not think Simmonds would be good, unless he would be willing to sign a $1,000,000 with the understanding that he may be playing in Rochester next year.
@mikeyscav
I agree let’s see what the kids can do.
Thompson has an excellent AHL resume.
Cozens continues to shine, Kahun appears to be a 2nd line player.
Dahlin will be better next year.
Mittelstadt has 39 pts in 114 NHL games and will 21 when the season starts.
Ristolainen showed huge improvement last year
No way will Skinner’s output be as bad as last year.
Ullmark appears to be ready for #1 status (we make the playoffs if was healthy).
Let me add, this is a crazy young defense. McCabe is 26 and Miller is 27. That is the age when defense-men finally develop.

I'm thrilled he doesn't plan on moving Risto because he would get fleeced in any trade involving him. To answer these questions:

- if you could make one dream trade or free agent signing this year...what would it be?

Trading for Tierney is a realistic dream, also would love Foligno back but I don't think that will happen

- what young players do you want to see on the roster next seaosn?

Cozens 10000%. TT should not be, I'd like to trade him for another prospect or a good bottom 6 forward. Mittelstadt I'm still high on, but not sure if he will be ready. I want to see Asplund too, and I'd like Borgen to get minutes

Botterill is completely lost and in over his head. Now we've got an idiot who already makes terrible decisions doing things in the interest of keeping his job... This offseason might gut the team for years.
