70M cap 2 CBO

Created by: bdb
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: May 27, 2020
Published: May 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the cap drops significantly, I assume they will need to offer CBO's. Even if the NHL resumes this summer there will be a large revenue deficit at least in the short term.

Far more likely they just scale back contracts. No way NHLPA agrees to this.

This would be a total possibility if the entire season and playoffs were scrubbed, But seeing that there will be playoffs probably prevents this from happening..

First I've heard of scaling back contracts, with CBO's the players still get paid, but they don't affect the cap. Scaling back would reduce everyone's contract 10-20% I assume. I'm not sure he PA would support a pay cut.

I agree it is unlikely but I'm not convinced the revenues will see a significant bump with the return of playoffs assuming no fans and lots of additional costs.

Agreed the only thing that might save them would be Television and even then that wont be enough.

Implementing a really low salary cap and 2 CBOs does next to nothing to actually cut the costs for teams, since they still need to pay bought out players.

What is most likely to happen IMO is that the cap stays the same, and the players’ salaries are scaled back, while their cap hit remains the same. That way it keeps the amount of escrow the players need to pay to as little as possible.
