The focus today is the series between the Rangers and the Hurricanes.
Forwards:
Rangers: The rangers have some real fire power up front with perhaps the hart trophy winner in Panarin. He is super Elite in all situations and has the ability to single-handedly take over games as we have seen plenty of times this season. Mika Zibanejad is an elite shooter to help fill out the Rangers at the top of the lineup. Depth wise, they are decent with guys like Fast who is good defensively.
Hurricanes: While not anyone on their forward group was Panarin level this season, they still have some great talent. Andrei Svechnikov led the way this season, turning into an elite two way winger. Terravainen is another very underrated player who is great player in transition all over the ice. The Canes also have some nice depth up front with the pick up of Trochek to be specific, who could be a real difference maker at times.

Advantage: Hurricanes. While Panarin and Zibanejad are amazing no doubt, Svechnikov, Terravainen, and Aho are no slouches either when it comes to fire power. They also have at least average to above average depth players covering the rest of their forward core.

Defence:
Hurricanes: No question the strength of this team Slavin and Hamilton (if he is ready to play) are both superstar defenceman worthy of Norris votes. Pesce is an great defensively as well. They have some real solid depth defenseman to choose from as well such as Joel Edmundson and Sami Vatenen.
Rangers: The rangers are led by rookie Adam Fox on the back end, who is elite and deserves to be recognized up with Makar and Hughes in the Calder votings. Deangelo is very good offensively, but has struggles defensively. Stall and Trouba were both not very strong this season.

advantage: Canes. Slavin, Hamilton, and Pesce are all good enough to help slow down Panarin.

Goalies:
Hurricanes: This is probably the most interesting position on the team for them, I assume they go with Mrazek, which is a little questionable but at least they have a great blue line to back him up.

Rangers: They probably go ahead and let Shesterkin play, and if he could still play the way he was before the season came to a pause, he could give the Canes a world of problems.

Advantage: This is one area that I feel the Rangers have a confident edge over the Canes, Shesterkin is the real deal.

My consensus: Canes in 4, While their is no doubt in my mind Panarin could steal game by himself for the Rangers, The overall depth is where the Canes will eat away at their lineup.

Players to watch are listed down below.

Looking at it like I did in the EDM/CHI Match-Up

Season Series: 2-2-0
GF/GP: NYR >
GA/GP: CAR >>
PP%: Push
PK%: CAR >>
Hits/60: NYR >>
Blks/60: NYR >>
GvA/60: CAR >
TkA/60: CAR >

Playoff hockey is a physical brand of hockey and that suits the Rangers a lot better. The key here will be goaltending and whose shows up. If Shesterkin comes out without missing a beat then Rangers take it pretty quick. Luckily for the Rangers they'll have Hank as a back-up and he's performed well in the playoffs in the past.

I have to go with the Rangers on this one.

Minor point, but i think NYR clearly has the better Top 6 F, while CAR's Bottom 6 (and coaching), are big advantages. I'd honestly call F a push.

Rangers outscored the Canes head to head and league wise, where the rangers finished 5th in goals for and the canes 15th. Rangers also had some of the top producers 5 on 5.

Canes take the d with depth and consistency.

Rangers take goaltending.

I got NY in 5. Defense was coming together down the stretch and goaltending was looking strong too. Given the Canes enough trouble in the past that I think they can get it done. Will be a tough series

You sure? Hockey Reference has them at a -1 goal diff vs CAR this year

Except I like the Canes for their experience, last year was very helpful. Rangers don't have a Justin Williams...and Jordan Stall. They do have Hank

Not a joke, you said the Rangers outscored Carolina head to head. When you look at the stats the Rangers scored 13 goals vs the Canes and allowed 14 goals in the season series.

Their still a very soft team to me and that doesn't work in playoff hockey. Williams also let the pressure get to him last year and came unglued during the Boston series.

Rangers are 4-0 vs. the Canes this year, with something like a +8/9 goal diff.

If Carolina's depth wakes up, Carolina could sweep this series. When Niederreiter, Trocheck, Staal, Foegele, Martinook, Necas, Williams, Dzingel etc have all fallen silent all it takes is one to wake up. just a secondary scoring threat outside of the big 3. Carolina has the best defense in hockey, I don't think it's particularly close with a team that actively employed Brendan Smith and Marc Staal. Goaltending everyone is glossing over. Shesterkin has been good, Hank has been a god... but do people forget Reimer was a .914 with incredible analytics playing behind a banged-up defense? I think goaltending is closer than people give it credit for, but I'd lean Rangers and fairly so. I think the defense could be more one-sided, nothing against the Rangers. Just when Carolina boasts a D core of Slavin, Pesce, Hamilton, Gardiner, van Riemsdyk, Vatanen, Fleury, Edmundson, Skjei and they have that Jake Bean guy who just won the D man of the year award in the AHL, I don't think anyone holds a candle to them. Upfront is where Carolina wins or loses this series. If Niederreiter is playing like a 20 goal scorer, if Williams continues to play as he did down the stretch, if Foegele goes back to a playoff beast.... then there's every chance Carolina sweep the rangers. At it's best, there are not many teams in the NHL that are better than the Carolina Hurricanes. I would take Carolina in 4, but this really depends on if the offense wakes up.

Yup your right, for some reason it kept pulling up the 18-19 seaaon instead of 19-20.
