2020 Flat Cap Bottom 6 Size Top Pairing D WIP

Created by: Itchy22
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 25, 2020
Published: May 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming Leafs needs are:
a) Top 4 Defenseman; preferrably Top Pair
b) Size in the bottom 6.

Cap room comes from moving 2 or 3 of Kerfoot, Johnsson & Kapanen (bottom 6) without going backwards. IF only move one, it's a "do-nothing" scenario b/c of cap space.
Dermott contract is a variable, and don't move unless clear upgrade.
Kapanen & Dermott are likely best trade chips to updgrade defense.
Source Credit - All RFA contracts from Alexander MacLean's (Dobber Hockey) Model.

Strategy is:
1) Move Johnsson contract for value (could be LTIR , let Pridham do his magic or a 4+, 3- Center)
2) Kerfoot has more value than Mango, move for a W with size that can play up and down line up.
3) Package Kap & Dermott for a Top 4 D that can play with Rielly.

Instead of knocking, suggest something else that works :) Unless it is Mackenzie Weegar or Brandon Carlo, because those teams aren't dealing within division.

I doubt Columbus or Anderson consider that. Columbus isn’t moving picks and Anderson won’t be singing anything longer then 2 year. I’d guess he signs for 1 year plays well and capitalizes as a UFA.

Yesterday you suggested Kerfoot and a second for Savard + Anderson. Does this mean that a Kerfoot for Anderson straight up is the value? And Savard is worth a second rounder?

It wasn’t yesterday. It was more like a month ago.

Anderson is closer to a second and Savard is worth a middle 6 center. Kerfoot would be on the lower level of center I’d like for Savard and Anderson.

You think Savard with 1 year left is worth more the Kerfoot? Savard is worth slightly more than Kerf probably but he'd pretty much be a rental. Could see the Leafs adding him at the TDL if Columbus isn't in it

If you fully read what I said it’s the same thing you said. Savard is worth a middle 6 center. Kerfoot is on the lower end of that spectrum.

Who knows what happens next year at training camp, I am not against sending Sandin and Liljegren down but if they force their way into the top 6 awesome. If Dermott is the best option sending one of those guys down for some extra seasoning isn't a bad idea. I sort of hope Liljegren clicks next year and gets the 3RD spot. Maybe you trade Dermott at that point if he's sought after. Otherwise your #7 is really good, which is also pretty awesome.

This 100% the right way to do things. Historically the Leafs try to force players into roles with expectations that they just can't meet. Putting a player in the best possible situation to succeed is always the best option. Make the player force you to play him.

I wouldn't say this is how they do things now but Babs did that I suppose. He did try to make Barrie a defensive defenceman instead of letting him do his thing.

Yes you are correct they definitely saw that rushing prospects or asking a 20 goal scorer to score 30 just wasnt working. Drafting and development take time and patients and when the leafs started to get good the team has the luxury of being even more patient. I actually find leaf fans are still wanting to do it. I get it fans want to win now but its very easy to make a mistake in a trade and actually make the team worse instead of better. Alot of trades on here about trying to find a RHD and trade one of kerfoot johnsson or kappanen. But hang on a second these are all 20 goal scorers that add alot to the Leafs lineup. Also just look at last year who was justin Holl? Essentially nothing now all of the sudden he looks like a good nhl player. So what if he takes another step fwd in development what if dermott takes another step in development. Now all of the sudden the solution to the defence problem has come from within the organization and it was right in front of us the whole time. Patients patients patients people seem to think the leafs are in a position of weakness but in fact they are in a postion of strength.

I don't think a RHD is half as important as people think it is, especially with how the Leafs system under Keefe works. Defenceman swing back and rotate sides constantly while carrying the puck. Have good puck handlers is the Paramount thing. What hand they shoot isn't nearly as important.
