The hardest of passes. Duchene is a dark cloud that just destroys a teams dressing room. I wouldn't accept him under any circumstances.

More like Soderstrom, Hayton, 2021 1st, 2022 2nd, Dvorak, Goligoski (as a cap dump)

Colorado was the worst team in the NHL, traded Duchene and made the playoffs. He went to Ottawa and they were in a playoff spot and then became a lottery team. Both of those things happened in the same season. The next year, he gets caught up in the Uber scandal where he was the vet telling the young players how terrible the coaching staff is and blaming them for everything. Then he goes to Columbus where he didn't really do much of anything and signs a huge deal in Nashville and they stop being good.

I don't care if I am being hard on him, #1 Matthews is infinitely better than him and younger so I would never trade him period, but also Duchene is just the worst. No thanks forever.

So Nashville is gonna pay 13.5 million for Mathews to leave in 4 years and then still paying 2.5 million for the 3 years after for Duchene to lay for Toronto.......sure and next they will ask Weber to retire early

Matthews would be traded for maybe 4 players in the league. If you are moving a 22 year old generational centre, you better be getting one back, otherwise you are just a disaster of a GM. McDavid, McKinnon, Petterson and Eichel are part of the deal for Matthews or you just never trade him. I am not saying he would be a 1 for 1 for McDavid or McKinnon but I wouldn't even consider anything that didn't have one of those 4 players. No one else is worth what Matthews brings to the table. These Arizona trades where the Leafs get a potential lesser Marner, some secondary stuff and a good defenceman don't make the team better. When push comes to shove in the playoffs, stars win. Matthews can score like no one else at 5v5, you just don't trade that unless you get some sort of game breaker in return who can offer a similar value. A bunch of maybes and lesser players does nothing.

I'd pay Matthews 15 million over paying Duchene the league minimum. That guy has a terrible attitude and ruins dressing rooms everywhere he goes.

Yeah but all the top 4 teams in the cup finals last year had no players getting paid over 8M. Toronto has 3 and no money for RHD.

That doesn't matter. All the teams in the cup final are teams that are at their peak. The Leafs are just entering their contention years. Jordan lost to the Pistons how many times before winning it all. Matthews hasn't played 4 complete seasons yet. The team is still building up to what they need to be to win it all. The core will carry the team there and at some point all the people saying these guys are overpaid won't have anything to say because lesser players will be making more. Crosby signed for a higher cap percentage on his last deal than Matthews has, which means the sentiment that Matthews is greedy is utterly ridiculous. The cap went higher and players make more, its simple economics.
