Flyers are kind of tight on cap this offseason like everyone else. Going to be very hard for them to eat 5 milish new salary while retaining close to 50% on Niskanen.

Likely why we haven't seen too many Niskanen to TO trade proposals on this site

Does this trade also come with a time machine that gives us Niskanen from 5 years ago? Because he's been declining for a few years now and probably isn't better than Dermott is right now. I love how most of the fans on here think a guys rating on Chel is 100% accurate and players never decline with age.

perfect bottom pair guy? Have you seen him play recently? He's not terrible but he's losing his speed and really isn't what he was even 2 years ago.

He's a lot better but would cost more to obtain. I am not really one of the Leaf fans that thinks we need to spend big on getting a right handed defenceman. There are a few I think would fit the team really nicely. Phillip Myers would be the one I want out of Philly. But I wouldn't overpay to get him. If you could send Dermott and another asset to get Myers, which I don't see why Philly would want that, I'd be thrilled. I'd send Kap for Myers straight up in a heart beat. Then I'd be happy to see a trade for a defenceman. Sending something like this for an over 30 guy who's best days are behind him is silly. I'd rather see how much Dermott will progress with a healthy season and a full training camp and season with Keefe's system.

I think you're underestimating Niskanen and how good of a compliment he was to Provorov this season. They can't accept this much salary, and leafs consider but idk what they decide

I really like Niskanen but he's what 33 already? His days are very numbered. The number of 30+ year old defenceman in the NHL has dropped every year in the past decade. Muzzin still has good years ahead but he may be a shadow of himself by the end of his contract. Way too much risk for the potential given up here.

We're not moving Niskanen. He's been the perfect fit for us and he is really underrated at age 33.

According to his numbers and advanced stats he is playing the way he did five years ago and he is better than Dermott right now.

Well I will admit his past season was better than the 3 before it but we are talking about a guy turning 34 this year vs a guy turning 24 this year. How many years of good production do you think these two players have ahead of them? Dermott likely has at least 10 more productive years than Niskanen. Throwing away potential NHLers for current NHLers sometimes makes sense but throwing away the entire career of a legit NHL. Dermott was better last year and the year before than Niskanen from an advanced stats point of view but Niskanen had a nice bounce back with the Flyers. Still I would never move a 24 year old entering his prime for a guy who at best has 2 or 3 years of usefullness.

It's completely understandable for Toronto to dislike this trade because of age. I was just arguing the fact that Niskanen is still pretty good as a 1st pairing d-man and he is in fact better than Dermott.

I really like Niskanen, I would have like to have seen him come to TO last year but he cost too much in salary for what the Leafs could take on. He would be a great partner for either Rielly or Muzzin. Him and Muzzin would have made for a deadly shutdown pair but such is life.

The problem I have with this site, is most people can't see past their emotions or bias. Fans will argue that (I am not at all pointing the finger at you sir) Niskanen is worth more than Dermott and Johnsson because at this exact moment he fits a need that the consensus of fans say is fair (fans don't really know what fair is, just what they like). They refuse to think objectively or do the digging to see the value of the players involved from a big picture standpoint. Fans think reality is way closer to NHL20 than it really is. Lol
