Matthews: being a dink and signing for top dollar, yet only short term; meanwhile we see McDavid, Draisaitl, Eichel, Stamkos, Kucherov and Stone all sign for 8 years.

Oh stop. Matthews might be overpayed, but he’s elite.

Now why would you want an overpaid forth liner in Mcdavid for the best player in the League? Lol

We'll see McDavid in Toronto at some point. It's bound to happen. But not before six years at least.

As your post illustrates, it's not worth it to have the best player in the league without being able to surround him with elite talent. At least Kapanen will be able to skate with him.

I wouldn't even want to do that deal as a Leafs fan, obviously McDavid is better than Matthews but I'd rather have 2 great players than 1 elite

Fair, reguarless, Matthew + Nylander is still less than Mcdavid + Neal

It isn't no one player is worth that. The difference between Matthews and McDavid isn't Nylander. Adding James Neal makes it an insult.

I'm not sure, thats pretty debatable. Neal with his caphit is probably negative value so if you think that Matthews and Nylander isn't at least equal to McDavid idk what to say

I highly doubt it. McDavid is better than Matthews, no argument. The difference isn't nearly the value of Nylander. Edmonton would be stupid not to do that trade.

Not at all debatable. Matthews and McDavid are closer to value than Neal and Nylander. You are taking two generational centres here, yeah McDavid is better, no one will argue that. The difference is not remotely close to Nylander though. It's not unreasonable to expect a year where Matthews and Nylander contribute close to 200 points and 100 goals combined. McDavid isn't going to score that by himself ever. Also Neal is terrible so this is not remotely close to fair. Its horrible.

I mostly agree with you but I think the difference between McDavid and Matthews is substantial enough for a trade similar to this. If it were pretty good player coming back with a good contract instead of Neal I'd do it

I think it's debatable that Matthews may be better at 5v5 overall than McDavid. His defensive metrics are certainly better as is his goal scoring. To think the difference is another player who looks like they could be a point a game player is ridiculous. Would anyone have thought trading Crosby for Ovie and Backstrom would have been fair?

not really, would u do Matthews and Hyman for like Seguin and Radulov? That seems like the best comparison as an outisder...

Thats not a comparable deal at all, in what world is a declining almost 34 year old Radulov with 2 more years on his contract the same as Nylander? And Matthews is a lot closer to McDavid than he is Seguin, not even taking age into consideration. Then you add Hyman who had more points than Radulov in less games, is younger, on a better deal and is the hardest working and best defensive forward on the Leafs.

Your comment should've said "an outsider that hates the Leafs"

The difference between McDavid and Matthews is not worlds apart, they are actually closer than you are giving credit here.

The big difference is between Nylander and Neal. McDavid is still the best player in the deal but as mentioned... I'd take 2 players in Matthews and Nylander than one elite player in McDavid.

It just makes for a more complete team.

McDavid is locked down for 6 years compared to 4 for Matthews and Nylander.

Lmfao dude you are trying so hard to make a point but you are so far off. Mcdavid is WAY better than Matthews. Matthews is an entire tier below mcdavid. Matthews isn’t even better than Crosby

Pure points look at this

Mcdavid : 351gp 162g 307a 469points. 1.34ppg

Matthews. 282gp 158g 127a 285 points 1.01ppg

The difference is massive. Mcdavid averages over 100 points a year Matthews is a ppg player so that’s 82 points a year. Gtfoh with your bias opinion. Ovechkin and backstrom for Crosby? Nylander isn’t a backstrom and Matthews isn’t an Ovechkin. Terrible compassions. Matthews is closer to Eichel than he is mcdavid. Matthews is a poor mans mcdavid. Best player in the world would cost you more than this.

No mcdavid is way better than Matthews. Matthews averages 82 points a year mcdavid averages over 100 points. Just pure production mcdavid averages .33 more ppg Matthews is an amazing player but people like you make him so overrated and impossible to like. I hate Matthews bc of how much people on this site glorify him. This is like me saying Kuznetsov and Matthews aren’t that far apart in value.

Ok before freaking out and going to the extreme the other direction look at points per minute and also consider for the first 3 full seasons under Babcock, Matthews was something like 116th in time on ice while McDavid was first. Now using your logic if one is a 100 point player and the other an 82 point player (an unfair assessment considering Matthews has been above a point a game the past 2 seasons) you are also saying that 1 100 point player is worth more than one 82 point player and (what I am assuming your argument will be) a 60 point winger. Just doing some quick math but 140+ points is more than 100.

While I have agreed and continue to agree that McDavid is the best player in the world, trading a franchise centre who is younger and undeniably has better defensive numbers for McDavid doesn't make sense if it also costs a young player who appears to be close to a point a game player as well.

To simplify if McDavid is worth 100 units of measurement and Matthews is worth 82 units, why would you also give up a player worth 70 units to get the 100 unit player? Especially if it also means you have to get a player worth minus 30 units?

If your not joking, then wow!! We could get more, and I don’t want Matthews because I believe when his contract is up he will go to Arizona.
