My take on PK Subbans career

Now, it's no secret that I'm no PK fan. I hate the guy actually, I think he's in the top 3 or 5 or the most overrated players of the last decade.

Now, why do I think such a thing when a lot of people seem to think he was a top 10 d-man in the league for 4-5 years?

Well, I believe it was Andreï Markov's and Mattias Ekholm's intelligence that made him what he was.

Let's talk about Markov first.

He had a couple of very bad injuries. Mind you, he only played 20 games in the 10-11 and 11-12 season... COMBINED. He was decimated. BUT, he didn't regress until the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons... why? because of his intelligence. That's what makes players like Mark Stone, Patrice Bergeron, Anze Kopitar, Ryan O'Reilly and Sidney Crosby such great/elite players. Of course they have crazy skills, especially Sid, but their intelligence is clearly above average. Way above it in fact. So was Markov's. Even if his mobility declined in his last years as a NHL player, his intelligence was what allowed him to keep being a very good top pairing d-man.

Markov (and Ekholm )allowed Subban to take crazy offensive risks... so did he!

Basically, I think Subban only has 1 elite season (the Norris one) and 4 very good ones. Not exactly a top 10 d-man in the league.

He was always a bonified number 2 d-man but never a true number 1 for a long time.

Subban IS overrated, Weber (apart from his injury issues around 2018) was always a way better overall player and as soon as I heard MTL moved PK for Weber, I KNEW MTL fleeced NSH. And I was proven wrong. It's not saying that «oh well I know everything» but yeah, I knew MTL won the trade. Big time. So did they. Imagine the impact Weber will have on Romanov, Fleury, Struble, Brook, Juulsen, Harris and others while continuing to be a top pairing d-man for 2-3 other seasons and an elite shutdown d-man until basically his final season..

1000000% agree about Markov, so underrated. Just quietly went about his business, never looking for attention.

I often compare him with Sandis Ozolinsh, talented offensive defenseman with pure hockey skills whose defensive issues were attenuated by his more defensive partners

As much as I miss Weber, Subban did great things for the Predators franchise and I think NSH would do the trade again. Helped propel the team to their first and only Stanley Cup Finals appearance - great in the Nashville community - helped with bringing new fans to hockey games. He was a great Predator on and off the ice. It made sense to trade him last year, but it was still a tough trade to process - just like when NSH traded Weber. I know he's not doing great in his first season in New Jersey, but I wish him nothing but the best.

Subban's game was always based on flash. He would make the big hit, score the gorgeous goal, but prone to mistakes. Weber is the opposite, he crushes people, but most of his goals are from the point thanks to his booming shot.

Given their styles of play, Subban's decline has and will continue to be more noticeable than Weber's ever will be.

Exactly. Weber’s style is MUCH MORE sustainable than Subban’s is. Weber will still be a top pairing guy at 37-38 IMO

Subban was wildly overrated because he was flashy. When he did something cool, it looked really cool! Same thing with Bryce Harper. Well, it doesn’t matter if a home run clears the fence by a foot or 100 feet, it only counts once, and the same goes for goals. Only counts as one no matter how flashy it was.

Both Markov and Subban benefit from one another, but I gotta agree...Andrei Markov was an underrated top 2 for the Habs throughout his career. If you think about it, Habs' defense hasn't been the same since the departure of Markov and on top of that no playoffs since his departure. Habs have been playing musical chair to find the ideal top 2 LHD and partner for Shea Weber since Markov went to the KHL.

True but the thing is they already let go Sergachev (the lone offensive D prospect who was seen as a potential replacement of Markov) before July 1st. Honestly resigning 38 yo Markov can't be worse than any of their current LHD.
(Chiarot has been amazing for the Habs but he's not a top 2. Same thing for Mete but all the injuries proved us that he was thrown into a "baptism by fire" situation. Really hope they dont do the same with Romanov)

Betting everything on Karl Alzner at the expense of Markov and Sergachev was a mistake.
