Best defense personal* ranked 1-31... doesn't mean you have 3-4 big names that it means your team has the best defense, see Karlsson/Burns/Vlasic

Really underrating the pens top 4. Petterson and dumo aren’t flashy but they’re great defensively and get the job done. Letang is elite, everyone knows that. Marino has been an incredible rookie this year. I’m sure you’ve heard about all the praise of him

Definitely think Minny, Pittsburgh, and Boston should be a lot higher and Nashville lower. Nashville’s bottom 3 are really weak.

Thinking about Marino, I was surprised he didn't get any recognition on the NHL's panel for the Calder

I agree. Once again he’s a name not mentioned a lot though. He’s well recognized in the cap friendly community but not in the media

I think Edmonton is underrated too but I don't care much. I love being underrated, especially going into the playoffs.

The Jets are too high on this list, they should be 3 or 4 spots lower.

All true. Marino's getting snubbed is typical national media. PIT's been great for so long people are sick of them winning. Marino for me is behind Hughes and Makar only. Kubalik was good but marino was better.

Yes but especially Toronto since they're cap-strapped in need of a good right-handed two-way defenceman. We really can't stress enough how important this Marino acquisition was. If it weren't for him, we would've been in cap hell stuck with 3 awful defencemen in Gudbranson, JJ and Schultz.

Surprised an analytical wizard like a Dubas would pass him & Fox. If he got one, the dcore would’ve looked like:

Muzzin-Holl
Rielly-Marino

Instead, it’s Barrie who stinks.

Why is Dahlin on there? I love the kid, but he played a highly sheltered 3rd pairing role this season. I know he'll be a top pairing guy in the future, but he certainly wasn't this year and likely won't be next year.

I am sure I will be laughed out of this site, but Buffalo is MUCH higher than that.
They had one of the worse starting GK in the league who sported a 0.898 sv %, yet only 16 teams gave up fewer goals then them.
They have one of the worse offensives in the league (only 9 teams scores less goals than they), which means the puck was in the defensive zone most of the time.
While other teams may have a better top 4, not including McCabe, Pilut and Jokiharju really does not do justice to the depth that the Sabres have.
I know this is based on current assessment, but the oldest Sabre defenseman is Miller and he is only 26. Meaning their future is even brighter.
You can check this out for yourself, but check out how old Burns and Chara were before they had 3 forty pt seasons. Ristolainen is 25 and he has 4 already.
Let me add, the Sabre's PK also definitely skews the GA total. Only 9 teams gave up fewer 5 on 5 goals than the Sabres.
I would imagine, with a better offense, PK and GK, they would appear to be much better.
Let me add, I am not advocating for a top 10 ranking just #26 is totally inaccurate.
IMO at least 10 spots higher if not more.
I await being skewered by you all. LOL

I wouldn't say 10 spots higher just because the d core is so young and inexperienced but once dahlin becomes a norris caliber defenseman and jokiharju becomes the solid stud that he's destined to be then this defense will be 10 spots (if not more) higher.

At a glance a team GA that ranks 17h over all with a starting GK only 4th from the bottom could only lead one to believe that the defense did a better job of keeping the puck out of the net than a dozen other teams.
Thanks for your comment.
At a glance would "obviously" lead one to believe at 17th overall is more realistic than 26th over all.
Then factoring in the horrific save percentage of 0.898 it is miraculous that the team did not let in more goals.
So taking more than a glance, 10 spots higher is the minumum.

Thanks for your comment.
Youth was not one of the factors I was using to rank them higher.
I used poor offence, poor GK, poor PK, the 5 on 5 ranking to give as reasons why 26th was totally inaccurate.
A team that ranked 10th over all on 5 on 5 with a GK with a horrible S% should make it obvious that 26th is way too low.
I mentioned youth "Meaning their future is even brighter".
So let's forget I said that, and please comment on my rational why they should be ranked higher.
