Losing Markstrom who carried them on his back many games this season, losing Tanev who was the best defender on the team(in terms of defense)

I would assume we signed Markstrom for the 2020-21 season but lost him in the expansion draft to Seattle, losing Tanev sucks but I would say Cernak is basically a younger version of him

I still can't wrap my head around why we would want to keep Toffoli. He's a good fit for our team and strengthens our top 6, but he's not more valuable than Tanev or Markstrom. Keeping Toffoli over either one of them makes our team worse.

I don't think anyone knows much of anything in terms of what the league will do, but I doubt a CBO will be coming this year unless the cap goes down.

I like the Cernak offersheet, but who knows whether he'd actually sign it.

I think you overpaid Gaudette by a little bit, but I like the Virtanen deal. I also think Pettersson and Hughes could get more if they wanted to, especially Pettersson.

Tanev would've been the second-best defensemen on the leafs

Despite finally having his healthiest season maybe ever, Tanev was actually probably the 4th best defensive Dman on the team behind Hughes, Edler and Stecher. I definitely hope the team moves on from him and Cernak would be a nice target.

I also have no problem losing Tanev if we can replace him with Cernak with Tanev being much older. I also can't see Hughes or Pettersson getting more especially if the cap stays flat. I did pay Gaudette more but just so we could have him signed with term.

Why would a 31-year old, career losing record, current LTIR, US$5 to $7M, 4-5Y termed Mark be taken by Sea?
    * If Van pads the deal to sway them into it yes but not straight up!
    * More like a younger asset to be suiting the STARBUCKS such as Jake/Gaudette etc. to be plucked OR Tofolli...

PS: CBO may be wishful thinking on a star to have that $6Mil go poof!

I think the biggest head scratcher is Carson Soucy getting 4 years @ $3.5 million.

I honestly have no idea what his value is I just like that he's young and defensively responsible

pretty sure it defers to 2021 if they lose in the play-in round

edit: nvmd i misread, but I think VAN will still be a playoff team in 20-21 so I dont think its going to be a situation like the 2020 SJS pick or 2019 OTT pick. itll probably a mid-late 1st

Ferland has an NMC too so someone has to walk out of Jake-AG-TT according to my expansion math...

Regarding Markstrom, that scenario could definitely play out. It's something that I've thought about too when gauging the cost to bring him back. However, relying on that scenario to save our future cap complications isn't a smart thing to do. Benning's biggest failure has been managing the cap in both the short term and the long term and we're probably going to feel the consequences when paying our two young stars. There aren't any easy solutions we can rely on like losing a 6M cap hit through a buyout and another 6-ishM through the expansion draft. We can dump some anchor contracts (Beagle and Roussel) as a start, but even that will cost us assets.

Cernak is younger and a good player, but I don't think he'll be able to fully replace Tanev. Green trusts Tanev a lot and uses him heavily on the penalty kill. He's also been a great fit with Hughes. Given how terrible our defense has been over the last number of years and the fact we don't have much help in the pipeline, any downgrade will be noticeable.

Eichel's cap hit % when he signed his contract was 13.33%. Pettersson's scoring rate over the first two years of his career is higher than Eichel's is (0.95PPG vs. 0.80PPG). Eichel signed his contract scoring at that pace. They've also played pretty much the same number of games over that span, indicating no durability advantage. So using Eichel's cap hit percentage as a baseline, Pettersson's cap hit would be around 10.9M with an 81.5M cap. Given that Pettersson has scored at a higher rate, he could reasonably ask for a higher percentage than Eichel, pushing himself into the 11M+ territory on a long term deal.
