Why are we giving a third to take Stepan's contract and sending a young C? Rangers decline.
like the VAN trade
Trouba may have struggled but he's our best minute eating top end physical dman. we should keep him and I doubt ANA wants him.
Rangers would be foolish to trade Zachary Jones, as much as I would love Sergachev.

We would take that deal for Trouba in a heartbeat. Since you already have a ton of left-handed forwards, and Ryan Lindgren and K'Andre Miller might benefit from additional development time, we'd offer you Jacob Larsson as an alternative to Max Jones.

Larsson himself seems like he needs some AHL development after last season. If we need a veteran stopgap we could easily spend a 3rd or so to acquire someone reliable like Oleksiak or Cole. But we'd consider Mahura or Terry as a Jones alternative.

Terry no chance because it thins us out on RW. Mahura instead of Jones is doable.

The Canucks have no cap space to begin with, and all they’re doing is taking on $4 million so they can lose Sutter’s usefulness and trade Lind for Andersson?

Yeah that makes sense. I think Jones makes the most sense for the Rangers. They tend to like that Gauthier/Lemieux mold of size + speed from their wingers and Jones has that.

No cap space to begin with? 15+ mil coming off the books this offseason.

But overall this trade makes a lot of sense for Vancouver. Gives Vancouver a soft landing and ideal mentor for Demko (Canucks most likely don't want to block Demko long term by giving Markstrom a lengthy deal that he'll demand). Sutter's on-ice contribution particularly on the PK is replaced by Andersson without any loss in performance. Lind himself is pretty blocked at RW in Vancouver if Toffoli comes back (seems like MacEwen is more favored by the organization). I can't see any reason why Vancouver wouldn't do this....

VAN decline, they don't need Lundqvist. They will re-sign Markstrom.

VAN will re-sign Markstrom, there not going to let him go after years of patiently developing him to be number 1. Without Markstrom the Canucks would not even be a playoff team.

yeah I don't see it at all. Markstrom will ask for a 4+ year deal at least (for 5+mil) - and he'll get it from somewhere. But Vancouver isn't blocking Demko from being a starter for that long.

Demko has played a career total of 37 games and also has concussion issues. The Canucks want to be playoff contenders not wait around and see if Demko is capable of being a number 1.

Markstrom's been a number 1 for 3 years now.

In terms of value added. Here's the value added rate Markstrom brought the Nucks this year. You might notice another name in this trade very close to him. Suggesting that there wouldn't be much of a performance drop off at all by losing Markstrom next year...

As a fan of the Canucks and watching him play we wouldn't even be as competitive without Markstrom. Markstrom was the team MVP for a reason, are season and playoff success falls on his shoulders. The team was trending downwards when he got injured.

It certainly makes sense why you would think that. Canucks D this year was poor in their own end, and their offense was much better than what they've had over the last few years (especially on the PP)- so naturally Markstrom has had to bail out his D a LOT more than he had over the last couple seasons, making him appear to be more useful. Though, when we isolate goalie performance we see that Markstrom is about the same goalie as last year.

The eye test says something else than the data. He is to important for Vancouver, they have spent a lot of time developing him to be a number 1. Demko might be ready but he also has health issues (concussion) and also being a starter in a Canadian market is very difficult to handle.
