Trading Rielly

Created by: jmac490
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 6, 2020
Published: Jun. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Credit to @Jack for the idea.
It would suck to lose Rielly, but the Leafs left side is pretty deep with Muzzin, Sandin, Dermott, and Lehtonen.
A few areas where Rielly could go would be NJ, who only have Butcher on their Left Side. The Jets, who have Morrissey, but wouldn't complain about adding a second strong LHD to their roster (they might complain about the Cap) and LA who doesn't have a strong defenseman in their lineup other than Doughty.

Rielly could be used as a stopgap for any of these three teams to have their prospects develop into Top 4 Defenseman (Smith/Bahl - NJ, Clague/Bjornfot - LA, Heinola/Stanley - WPG)

I know a lot of folks dislike Demers as he ages, but for 1 year, he can play the mentor role for Sandin and give a presence in the room. He is also more of a defensive defenceman now, so Sandin should have more freedom to move around the ice to make plays.

Getting back one of Lowry/Iafallo/Zacha would also give the Leafs more freedoms to move Kerfoot/Johnsson for pieces of necessity and to restock the prospect pool.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated, just please keep it civil :)

Sometimes I shouldn't post past 2am. I forget Suzuki is a hockey player, and underestimate Montreal's C depth.

Just for fun, would the Leafs trade Reilly for Tony DeAngelo and maybe a pick/prospect?

I completely forgot about Suzuki last night. That's my bad. Although Domi > Kerfoot, I'm still not sold with him being a 3C (Domi). He should be playing Top 6 minutes, but I guess Montreal has the depth now.

Yeah although the way Julien coaches all his lines essentially play equally at 5 on 5 with the difference in ice time being special teams. So whether a player plays on the 1st or 4th line it doesn't really prevent him from getting quality time.

I really don't want anything to do with toxic DeAngelo in Toronto. And isn't he an RFA this offseason? I'm sure he is going to want the moon for the season he had

It's pure fantasy lunacy, because we are not trading Parayko. Zero chance. Screw top 4, we have a really balanced top 8-9. Scandella is and has been a fantastic partner for Parayko, allowing him to open up his own offensive game. We also have Gunnarsson, Mikkola and Perunovich on the left side. You guys need to let this "ooh we can get Parayko" stuff go already.

I read just fine. It makes sense for Toronto. It makes no sense for the Blues, regardless of how many times people insist it does.

If you resign Petro, you’re gonna have a logjam on the right side. Makes sense for both teams, Rielly would excel with Petro.

I mean, you could always lessen the logjam by shifting Paryako/Petro/Faulk to the Left Side.
But the odds of St. Louis finding 9M for Petro is slim to none

Funny, folks say we have that now. You can see how it's really hampered us...

What Reilly might do is irrelevant, we're not trading a superior player for something we do not need. We have more than enough offense coming from the backline. Reilly wouldn't even get PP1 time for us. And we're not dramatically altering the fiber of a championship team for him. We have no need to do a major reconstruction of any kind. Why should we? None of that makes no sense. Still.
