Acquiring PK Subban a Pittsburgh goalie and Josh Anderson

Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 7, 2020
Published: Jun. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assume Ottawa does not win the Lafreniere lottery and no 2020 draft picks (eg Stutzle, Drysdale and Lapierre) make the 2020-21 roster. Shane Pinto and Jacob Bernard Docker sign their 3-year ELCs after the upcoming NCAA season and burn their first year next Spring.
Ottawa trades RFA Chris Tierney, Mads Sogaard and the Gaborik contract to Pittsburgh for Tristan Jarry (or Matt Murray). Instead of losing the goalie for nothing in the Seattle expansion draft, Pittsburgh gets a long-term 3C, a future goaltender and can place Gaborik on LTIR to increase cap space, like Leafs did to sign Marner.
Ottawa trades Bobby Ryan (retain 50%), Marcus Hogberg, Christian Jaros and the rights to M Wikstrand to NJD for PK Subban (NJD retains 40%). Ryan at fair market value can be a Top 9 placeholder during NJD rebuild; Hogberg lets NDJ buy out Schneider; Jaros is NHL-ready RD and Wikstrand can come to North America in 21-22. Chance for Subban to start fresh in Ottawa playing with Chabot on Fair Market Value contract.
Ottawa trades a 2021 2nd round pick to VGK for RFA Keegan Kolesar. Kolesar replaces Sabourin and rides shotgun for all the young guns.
Ottawa trades 2020 2nd and 3rd round picks to CBJ for RFA Josh Anderson. CBJ gets back in the draft. Anderson can start fresh on a short-term contract.
Ottawa trades Artem Anisimov (retain 50%) to Arizona for late round pick and M Hossa contract. Anisimov can replace UFA Richardson on Arizona fourth line.
Result? A competitive, fast 20-21 team with a good mix of skill and size, + lots of high end prospects knocking on the door in 21-22.

VGK all in on that trade.

I’m guessing it wouldn’t even cost that much. More like a 4th or 5th at this point. He seems blocked with Carrier/Roy and a probable Reaves re-sign.

but In reality the Sens would never do that bc of how cheap Melynk is, PK moves to big Signing bonuses in his final years. Thats something Uncle Eugene avoids like the plague, he cant afford those big S Bonus cheques

I'm not trading Hogberg for Subban. I'd rather just keep Bobby.

Also what is the obsession with Keegan Kolesar? Are you his mother or something?

I want a 6'3" 220 pound "mother" who:
(1) can skate, hit, win board battles, block shots and drop the gloves on occasion to protect his teammates.
(2) costs approx $1 million, and
(3) can be acquired for a draft pick.
If not Keegan Kolesar (who I think fits the profile), how about the Canuck's Zack MacEwan, perhaps through an offer sheet?

OK, do you say the same thing for Matt Murray?

PK Subban's cap hit is $9 million but his salary for next two seasons is $8 million (6 in signing bonus, 2 in basic salary). I envisaged Ottawa taking on a cap hit of $5.4 m with an actual salary of $4.8 m. I think PK Subban is still good value at $4.8 million. The high signing bonus is more an obstacle to a buyout, which is not really relevant in this case.

The player you just described is literally Nick Paul. They already have what you're looking for.

Even if Ottawa desperately needed to add that kind of player, you don't trade a 2nd round pick for a guy who is a fringe NHL Player at best.

They also have Mark Kastelic who I think is going to fill that exact role in a couple of years.

I guess you haven't been paying attention to the news right now with Melynk being in hot water with using the Sens Foundation money....signing bonus money is a big issue for him, there is a reason why he doesnt do bonuses, he cant afford to shell out large payments

More-no. Something different-yes. I don't really see a need for Tierney and PIT hasn't (that I can remember) wasted $$ on LTIR. Who's that prospect? That package won't appeal to PIT.

The thinking behind my proposal...Tierney is a top-tier 3C. Solid face-offs/ Penalty kill etc. Pittsburgh planned for Bjugstad to play 3C, but he has been injured all year and is out for the season (or longer), The current 3C (McCann) is really a winger. Tierney is a perfect fit behind Crosby and Malkin.
Pittsburgh is going to lose one of Murray or Jarry to Seattle next summer, so they need to restock their goalie inventory. Sorgaard is one of the top Under 20 goalie prospects who was drafted by Ottawa in the 2nd round last year. A 6'7" Dane playing in Western Canada Jr - they say he is a young Ben Bishop.
Pittsburgh will be really cap-squeezed if the cap does not increase. My bet is that they will want to deploy the Toronto Mitch Marner trick and acquire an LTIR contract (like Hossa or Gaborik), which under the complex cap rules allows them to increase their cap space by that contract's cap hit ($5 million or so), so they have more room to sign one of Murray or Jarry long-term. If Bjugstad's back injury is truly long term (ie no chance that he will recover and be declared fit to play next season), then they can use his contract to play this cap game,

I understand all that. You sold me on Sorgaard, and it's an interesting idea to take on a bad contract to LTIR it. How's Tierney's speed and playing? Face-offs and penalty kill is great but we need some offense from the 3rd line too.

Tierney is a reliable pro who does all the little things right and contributes 15 goals/50 points. If you put him between McCann and Hornquist you would have one of the top third lines in the league. All three of them can also play up in the lineup if there are injuries. Personally, I would like Ottawa to sign Tierney long term, but they have lots of promising young centers, they need a proven #1 goaltender if they are going to become serious cup contenders, and Tierney is a valuable addition to a team like Pittsburgh that is in win-now mode.
