The reason why Toronto got that return for Kessel was because Kessel would only go to teams with no cap space meaning the Leafs were at a severe disadvantage in negotiating. I doubt the Leafs trade Marner and if they do it'll probably be for less than that

honestly if leafs were to trade marner send him to a team who 1. has cap space to take that whole contract with no retention and 2. is going through a rebuild. NJ is perfect as they got picks, prospects, and depth players toronto can use, they can take his entire contract and still have room, plus he should help Hughes settle in better.

If leafs move marner they can go to a team with cap space and is rebuilding. LAK, NJ, have the resources to make a very good trade for him. I could see NJ trading for him as he would speed up that rebuild by 3 years. Overall not saying they should trade him but if they do they got better options than they did with kesse.

replace Légaré with Poulin and yeah that would be an equivalent trade. The issue with this trade though, is that Kessel was 27 when traded and Marner is only 23. While prime Kessel was a better player than current day Marner, the age difference makes marner more valuable. Also, the leafs were in a completely different position when they traded Kessel. They were rebuilders. If leafs WERE to trade Marner they'd need guys who can help now, not futures.

You’re were about the NMC. But Marner’s contract is so bad that’s why I felt his value should be similar to Phil’s.

Yes you are right. However, I’ve seen a lot of people suggest that the Leafs need a retool, so if that is the case, I feel moving Marner for younger pieces would help since they clear out 9 Million in cap space to get a good defenseman.

In any marner trade, Marino would have to be involved. Leafs would need a young RHD as a piece in any marner trade

Well, Marino is untouchable from the Pens perspective since he is the future RD when Letang retires. The Leafs can use the assets they got in this trade to get a quality RD, or sign one in FA like Pietrangelo. I’ve seen people suggest on Twitter & Reddit that the Leafs should cap dump Marner & Sign Alex or Dougie Hamilton next offfseason.

Marner is definitely not a cap dump. Marino would be needed in a marner trade. Simple as that

I can see Toronto wanting a young RHD like Marino in a Marner trade but I can't see it happening cuz no team wants to give up a young top 4 defenceman on ECL or excellent contract for a 10 million dollar player.

It’s not like marner will be traded either
