I just ask that because I've been vocal on capfriendly that Stan's likely playing a game right now. If he were to go out into the market as say....Strome's available, but for an F ton...he'll get zero bites and learn nothing. If he goes out to the market as says...Strome can be had for relativley little. He'll get more information that he can use in a negotiation. I don't think Stan's low on Strome at all. He's just trying to get leverage for a negotiation.

I also think this is why for some ungodly reason they decided to put Strome at wing last year. It was the dumbest move I've seen since the Hawks thought Kane was a center. When Strome was a full time center he got 51 points in 58 games for the Hawks.

Seems like wildly wishful thinking. Players go quietly on the block all the time, and that gives GM's an idea of what to expect in terms of return. We saw it last offseason with guys like Ehlers, Mantha, Ristom Zucker, etc. GM's don't publicly put a player on the block and say that the value isn't prohibitive unless they don't want that player on the team next year because it does 2 things: 1) It hurts the relationship between the player and the organization which makes resigning difficult if not impossible 2) It makes it hard to actually get a lot in a trade after you've said that the cost isn't particularly high.

But it terms going forward it makes sense, Chicago sees Dach as the 2C starting next year. Strome is going to command somewhere in the 3.5-4 mil range for a bridge and realistically he's a 3C at this point whose box car numbers were heavily enhanced by being next to Kane/Debrincat. Bowman has to sign Kubalik and he's infatuated with Saad so he probably wants to keep that cap room for extension negotiations with him this season.

That seems to be logically where things are, Bowman puts 3C value on Strome, Strome is probably asking for 4-5 mil in negotiations given his point rate last year and draft pedigree and Bowman doesn't think it's worth the trouble to deal with.

But I mean if you want to believe the narrative that Stan is trying to pull a galaxy brain maneuver for someone like Strome, I can't stop ya.

Well let's use some of your logic here of Shat/Pionk... Panarin played with Kane too... How did his production drop off after leaving? I'm pretty sure he's getting Hart nominations. Difficult to argue one of these and not the other. The larger issue is position. Strome shouldn't have played wing. Just like Kane shouldn't play center. That's why we see a drop in production.

GMs and players have negotiations all the time. William Nylander... To expect a big contract when everyone believes the cap will be stagnant is ridiculous. It would be in Strome's best interest to take a 1 year prove it deal with the Hawks (where he's played his best hockey) for whatever the cap hit will be. When the cap goes up...that's when he should be looking for a big contract.
