tavares wasnt overpaid lul. 11mill was fair for a center of his status. Heck he took more term and less money to be here. San Jose offered 13 mill and he turned it down to play for us. Stamkos making 500k less would have changed nothing.

Imagine a world were JT was the highest paid NHL player. Matthews would have got 15 million if JT got 13 from SJS.

Tavares making 13mill woulnt have really changed much since Mcdavid made 12 and Matthews saying he was better would have made Dubas raise an Eyebrow and go really now.

If Matthews wanted 7-8 years, Dubas would have handed him 15-17 million per season. That's why he's a genius.

I don't think there's enough quality FAs + the flat cap to jump McDavid. I do know that when Matthews next contract comes, he'll be the highest paid player in the league and hopefully we get him for 8 years

Well you said Toronto. At the age 15 he played outside the GTA, didn't sleep in his childhood bed. "Hometown" might be important to some. But a high percentage of the population moves away from "home" in their late teens and early twenties. Salmon might have to return home, but people not so much.
