Why are we retaining? Archibald makes nothing compared to johnsson plus isn’t he your guys cap dump? I’d rather keep one of our best pkers plus he’s actually lowkey pretty good

Archibald isnt that good. Johnsson is a 50ish point winger and isnt a cap dump

I just don’t really see the points archibald brings in a lot with pk plus makes less an we can’t really add cap. It’s not like johnsson is a difference maker I like the goal but just can’t add cap right now especially retaining on archibald lol what’s the point

Edit mean to say like the guy not like the goal lol

Johnsson isn't a 50ish point player. He got 43 last season, on pace for 40 this season (and only 15 goals), while playing with two all stars next to him. Johnsson also just came off of a season ending knee injury requiring surgery so there is definitely risk there. Going on 26 with a $3.4M cap hit, Johnsson isn't big trade value and not sure many teams are interested in him.

He definitely played injured for most the time when he was around but I agree that he has almost no trade value. He also spent most of his time with Kerfoot and Kapanen with Mikheyev and Hyman in the top 6 for the majority of the season. I cant see the leafs trading him this offseason but if they do he wont be a cap dump

Last year, when he had better stats, wasn't he playing in the top 6?

When he had better stats he was with Matthews and Nylander/Kapanen but this year he played mostly on the 3rd line

His first year with decent stats he also had an unsustainable shooting % that he will not realistically repeat. He is what he is, an undersized, 3rd line winger with a lot of speed and likely will never come close to repeating his first season's point totals. Since his biggest asset is his speed, and as mentioned already he is coming off a serious leg injury, and has a high cap hit for a 3rd line winger, their will be very little interest from any other team, especially from now until next trade deadline. At that point, if he proves that he recovered from his injury and he can produce with less than elite line mates, a contending team may take a chance on him if they have a hole to fill in the bottom of their line up. Until then, any return will be minimal, and comparable salary will likely have to be taken back in return if a trade did happen between seasons. Most teams will be tight against the cap and will not be interested in doing additional cap juggling so they can take on an undersized, over paid, average 3rd line left winger coming off a leg injury.

Which is likely why he was on pace for only 15 goals. 15 goal 3rd liners are easy to find in the NHL and not at a cap hit of $3.4M. Johnsson can play up and being a supporting role player, but he's not going to really move the needle.

I don’t mind Johnsson but Archibald is an important player for the PK and Johnsson is coming off that big injur, so for that reason I think the Oilers say no.

Wow, you're either totally ignorant about your favorite team or flat out lying.

Johnsson played 424:28 with Matthew's out of a total TOI of 560:08 at 5v5 this season. That's 75.779575% !!

Oh, and he scored just 3 goals at 5v5 this year, all of them when Matthews was on the ice.

What was his shooting percentage when he was on the ice with matthews? I dont have it infront of me but I can guarantee you it will regress. I was wrong about his ice time. I remember him generally playing with Kerfoot and Kapanen. You also seem to forget that Johnsson never has gotten much pp1 besides a short strech when kadri was injured last season. Hes a great netfront player (just like arvidsson) and would put up 55 points on a different team. He would be Edmontons best LW'er

Not even close. And he wouldn't get a sniff of PP1 in Edmonton - they have the best powerplay in over 40 years. And if he can't perform with a superstar center, he's not going to magically turn into a 55 point player on another team.
