Kapanen is close to a 1st but I'd say a B prospect and a 2nd. Johnsson is likely to fetch a third.

No chance that Johnsson returns a 1st rounder at present. Tough injury and a bad season almost assures that to be the case.

Kapanen could likely return a lower 1st rounder as his skill set is known and his cap hit/term are manageable.

That being said... Everything below the top two lines in this presentation is small sample sizes, unknowns, near retirees and AHL'ers.

The D has not improved and you are left with a two line team and a little over 3 million dollars in cap space to build a contender with two key UFA's at seasons end?

No thanks.

I think Kakko is dead on. If Kapanen gets a first, it will be a very late first, especially in this year's draft. No way Johnsson gets anywhere near a first, his contract is not reasonable, his 3.4 million AVV is about a million more than most 3rd line wingers would get with similar expected production (10-15 goals, 30-35 points). On top of that he is only 5 10 and coming off a serious leg injury. Covid has caused an unexpected likely flat cap scenario, most teams cannot afford to take on a cap hit without sending similar cap back the other way. If anything, Johnsson may get less than a 3rd round pick this year.

Even if Johnsson doesn't get injured this season it's doubtful they could get a 1st round pick for him, that being said if you're dealing with Brisebois anything is possible... 😂

Marleau got a 3rd, Martinez got 2 2nds, scandella Dillon got 2+, all as rentals. Both Kapanen and johnsson have term and good contracts. Gusev got 2 and 3, Shaw and Braun got 2 and 3 each.

Might not get a first. But as I said, totally besides the point. They'll be gone for futures unless get a RD.

Johnsson is a 1st line LW on a good contract. No way he only fetches a 3rd.

I agree the bottom 6 is unproven. But this team has serious cap issues with a flat cap. Will need to use young unproven guys. Or trade Marner. Which I don't see happening. And remember, Toronto is an elite team if get competent goaltending as it is now. Drop the terrible Ceci off the roster and automatically better on D. Having 2 of the best 10 forward lines in the league is certainly pretty good.

On what planet is Johnsson a 3rd liner?

I agree lack of bidders might keep return below a 1st, but again, you're missing the point. It's a cap dump for futures.

Nah. Not from where I'm sitting anyways.

Removing those players and not improving the D core is a big mistake.

They will make the cap work. They always do.

This doesn't work. What you have here is a borderline playoff team IMO.

these guys simply haven't been productive to warrant such a return. Each have 1 40 point season and it's not like they make peanuts

Way to miss the point. Plus, watched any leaf games? Their top 2 lines are both 1st line. Play almost identical minutes. And Nylander/Marner bounce back and forth between centres.

This team is better on D just dumping Ceci. And no way they can survive a flat cap without dumping at least 1 decent sized contract. I personally would prefer dumping Andersen but don't see it happening. Or trading Reilly for a good RD. But again, unlikely.

And again, some of the worst goaltending in the league and easily a playoff team. Team 901 save % and if take away the 6 competent games by Campbell it goes below 890. That's brutally bad.

Both under 26. Both on cheap contracts (despite what you say, neither are in the top 300 in salary in the league). Both get about .5 pts per game. Kapanen on the 3rd line with often bad linemates, and johnsson on a line and not designed to get points but to retrieve pucks. And both have good advanced stats.

Johnsson suffered a major injury and hasn’t proven he’s a top 6 winger. Stats say he’s worth around a 3rd and a b- prospect at best. (Kemp+3rd)

That isn't my argument and I think you are dead wrong on your trade suggestions.

kap is worth a late 1st at best. I could see teams at the deadline paying that for him. Johnsson and a 1st is a no. Maybe last year when he scored 20 goals and was making 790k but now no. A conditional 2nd is the best they can get

I hope Nylander does well in the upcoming 24 team playoff.

I'd trade him this off-season.

Whether you like it or not, he IS a top 6 winger. And go actually look at some trades in the last few years. Bottom 6 guys get 3rds or better. The injury issue does matter, but if he comes back and plays in the playoffs it will boost his value immensely.

Bye snowflake.

You're argument that they can just ignore the cap without trading anyone is insane. Thinking what's essentially similar to the current team but that won't get sub 900 goaltending will be worse? Also crazy.

Nylander has a floor of 60 points and has amazing advanced stats regardless of who he plays with. And is an absolute steal at under 7 million. Marner at 4 million more per year? For maybe 20 more points a year and worse advanced stats? Marner is awesome, but to me I'd take Nylander and a 4 million upgrade at RD over him any day.
