take Smith to get Georgiev

Created by: Trickster
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2020
Published: Jun. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What if we take on Smith to acquire Georgiev?
Does this do it? Open to making changes.

And if Vancouver didnt want to sign Markstrom but needed a goalie for 1 year, is this enough to Leafs for 1 full year of Andersen? Idea is to give Demko another year of tandem and then give him the reigns next season. Also open to making changes .

If you're not getting at least a first for Freddy then it isn't worth it imo.

Two seconds is quite a good return for one year of Freddie, especially if Toronto are thinking of moving on from him. Change that prospect to Jett Woo and I think this trade is almost mandatory if Georgiev is in the fold,

This is really creative, and a much better idea than mine of moving Andersen to Minnesota. Vancouver was my next thought but I wasn't close to figuring out who to replace Freddie with. This is really good. If Jacob Markstrom is asking for the moon, it would be a very good path for the Canucks to take. You and I may be alone here, but I'm impressed.

Andersen covers up a lot of warts for the Leafs. I know he wasn't as good this season, but I think fatigue might have been an issue. He reminds me a lot of Miikka Kiprusoff, in that the Leafs have ridden Andersen hard, he's bailed out the team on several occasions , but after a few years the play declines a bit. The Campbell deal should help that. I would look at keeping him. Also worth noting TOR is a very difficult city to be the #1 goalie in. His temperament is perfect for it.

All absolutely correct. I think that this is the sort of trade that a GM makes out of necessity, not creativity. In other words, I think Toronto doesn't even consider this unless there is some reason to believe that the Maple Leafs won't be signing him to a new contract. That would be the generating influence to move him, not the receipt of a nice offer from Vancouver. With that assumption, then these two deals make very good sense for all three teams. I wonder what Ranger fans think about the value of their return.

New york had there chance to give us Georgiev and they overvalued him. To think they could have had Kapenan. Oh well we got campbell now and he has been great. As for Freddie to vancouver. Could work. He is better than what they currently have and has playoff experience which is valuable. Overall not bad but i see a 2nd and maybe a low/mid prospect coming back.

Yeah, but that was at the trade deadline. Still, my knee-jerk reaction of Woo plus two seconds is too rich. Woo, a second and a fourth is probably more like it.

The TDL is when players are at their MOST value. The draft is when picks are at their most value.

VAN decline, they can just re-sign Markstrom instead of giving away assets.

Picks gain value once teams realize they can't make the playoffs.

I legit have questions here. You say picks gain value once team realizes they can't make the playoffs. I'm asking, but also for a moment assuming the opposite is true. Picks lose value once a team realizes they WILL make the playoffs. Thus........Any PLAYER getting traded is maximizing the pick value @ the TDL.

I think were saying the same thing in different ways????

I know it's 1 full year of freddy, but anything in the world can happen during a year. McDavid's been hurt...Crosby's been hurt. Once a team gets to the TDL and realizes that they can make a legit run for a cup.....they're willing to pay more than in the beginning of the year.

Not for rentals

ESPECIALLY for rentals. (RFAs aside...they're a different story) Yes, I understand if you get a quality player with term...that's awesome. BUT That's not what were talking about. As teams go through a season there are tons of things that can happen. Injuries...gaining cap space since cap is technically a day by day thing...etc... Another reason rentals are in fact DESIRED...is actually because the leave. It means that a GM can continue to plan for the future they way they had previously envisioned without this additional cap hit. Maybe there's an extension in place...ok that does sometimes happen, but it's not a requirement. it's an option.

Agree with you on the creativity. I know people are pointing out how Lehner had better numbers this season than Andersen but what about Andersen's overall time and numbers with the Leafs?

Looking at it from a Vancouver perspective, Andersen is a nice stop gap if Markstrom is going to cost more. Another year for Demko and DiPietro to grow into NHL goalies while Andersen holds the fort.
