Peter Laviolette is hired as the next coach of the team.

Mermis was solid last season, he showed good signs, sits in AHL and waits to be called upon when needed.

If McCabe comes with an extension in place, we likely have to add a pick or a little something else, nothing significant, but it is a price worth paying for a reliable defensive defender.

Also address it in free agency, adding two defensive defenders will allow Will Butcher and PK to play more offensively and not worry too much on defense is it is not their strengths.

Team will have plenty of money to resign its core and now has winger depth with Kap, Palms, Bratt, Boqvist, and Gusev with Foote likely needing another year.

Def more competitive next year, I think a new and experienced coach can go a long way and with Laviolette I see them heavily addressing defense as it was what made him so successful in Nashville, hence going after McCabe and Hamonic. Having good defenders around Smith would help him develop nicely also.
