It would make a little sense, but I feel like Steen would retire rather than waive his NTC to go play in Ottawa.

Yeah pretty sure Steen would retire before he'd play in Ottawa.

Steen's only owed $3.5m, so OTT could retain 1/2 his cap (and only about $75k in hard dollars) and move him somewhere he wants to play for a pick...I had proposed a scenario where they take Bozak and do the same thing.

Some interesting work here, (don;t see TBAY moving off of Cirelli) but OTT could help a few teams out and continue to stock up on 1st rounders.

Not gonna lie, besides stern probably choosing to retire like others are saying, these are very good ideas. Both those contracts will be up by the time the big time RFAs are up (save for Tkachuk), and then you’re good to go! Nice job!

Is there anything besides a 1st rounder that the Canucks could use to dump Eriksson? Some combination of 2nds/prospects?

He's not giving up $5,750,000. Just forget that. No one in their right mind is going to retire when that's the check on the table for a few months of hockey.

True, but he’s not waiving his NTC to go from Saint Louis to Ottawa either.

Not a fan of Colin White or his contract. Exactly what has he done to be worth 4.75 million.
Especially if a cap hit on Cirelli is 5.74 million.

I don't think the penguins except the value isn't there. They don't need that contract.

That may or may not be. You never know. He might realize his time is done and the team needs him to do them a favor.

good luck resigning tkachuk, What you have the cap? Hell no Almost everyone want more than what you gave them and Some trades will be declines, also you have like 4 to 5 vets so based on experience, you're not going to win the cup, also Seattle isn't taking a bad contract from this team

I am a big fan of Labanc based on his advanced stats (https://www.tsn.ca/talent/on-kevin-labanc-s-confounding-contract-1.1335215). Maybe too much so. He's a top 9 RW for sure with the potential to be a top 6?

The Sens are swimming in cap money, hence their ability to take on bad contracts in the short term AND sign their key young players, Tkachuk included. You need only look at 2021-22 under this scenario to see that the Sens would have $26 million in cap space, $40 million a year later. The Sens aren't trying to win the Cup next year BTW. But thanks for the input.

He is absolutely a top 9 RW with the potential to be top 6. However, his advanced stats tell a different story to how he plays visually on a nightly basis. He's worth around 2 2nds in my opinion, but not a first. If you value him that much, I'm definitely not complaining though lol

I wonder what the cap penalty would be if he was traded and retired, and who would be charged the penalty. Could Ottawa buy out his contract and allow him to sign for the league minimum back in St. Louis? I got this idea from a St. Louis sports blog that suggested shipping Steen and a 1st to Ottawa as a way of clearing cap to resign Pietrangelo. Seems like a logical move on both teams' part.

I don't know where White fits into the Sens long-term plan. He had an off year for sure (injuries?), but showed signs of top-6 potential the year before. I am a Colin White fan, but a confused one at that.

I'll be really interested to see how TB manages Cirelli and Sergachev in the offseason. Both key pieces to their future, but they are so far against the cap. I can see them trying to ship Gourde, Johnson and/or Killorn to open up cash to resign those two players, but am hopeful that a team (preferably Ottawa) finds a way to get in on the bidding for their services. With comparisons to Bergeron, Cirelli really intrigues me and he'd be a perfect fit in Ottawa.

Are you a Pens fan (assuming so based on your name). If so, what do you think they'll do with goalies in the offseason?

Thanks. I know this website is for wishful thinkers like me, but I hope Dorion takes this type of philosophy into the draft and free agency period. It is a really exciting time to be a Sens fan again (minus Melnyk of course).

Great questions. That Eriksson contract is so terrible that I'm sure Van has limited options. Admittedly I don't know much about the Canucks' prospect pool. But the Sens are stacked with prospects and might prefer a pick they can flip. What do you think?
