Gourdes contract is looking terrible. I'd be hard pressed to give up either piece

give him minutes with eichel and skinner/olofsson and he could easily get 40 points, possibly as many as 60. It's a bad contract, but he also has had bottom six minutes and not much exposure to the TB elite core. When he did have that, he thrived. I think it's a fairly small price for a fairly large and likely bounceback

Johnson probably doesnt net you that kind of return. On pace for 39 points in an 82 game season and he's got 4 more years on that contract, all the while cap constraints give you little to no leverage. Probably similar to a Marleau in Toronto situation

That's really not a good comparison, Marleau was bought out at age 39/40. Johnson is 29 turning 30 and played a majority of the season on the 3rd line. He's a 50 point player in the top 6 and can play center. If he waives teams will pay for him to play there, Marleau didn't play a single game for Carolina.

I mean the buyout would hurt more for Johnson because the contract is longer so he likely wont get bought out, but realistically, its a cap-strapped team needing to send a guy off so they can sign their prized RFA with similar levels of production

My point here isnt necessarily in Johnson's value, its in the situation. If a team has to actually give up something to get him, theyre just gonna say "okay, sorry, guess you can just wait for an offer sheet on Cirelli then." and especially for the same GM that gave up a 1st for Barclay F'n Goodrow, I wouldn't put it past him to give in to a trade that easily

They were cap strapped last year, sent out a 47 point player making >5M with 4 years of term and got a 1st in return. Tampa has insane depth on their team that even their middle 6 players can be PPG players on other teams top lines

yeah sabres would take Gourde forsure if he waived. they wouldn't pay much due to the situation but if they could add Gourde for like a 5th round pick they'd do it

Yeah I guess that's fair, but he was younger, was at 50+ points on an 82 game pace and had 50+ points the previous 2 seasons. Johnson's production was slightly on the decline and never really had insane production except for 1 year. Definitely didn't realize they have the direct Miller comparison, but I think teams will also start to think about this more after seeing what Carolina did to Toronto and just how much they can get out of contending teams in order to keep their RFAs, and I also think the NMC hurts a little but not a lot

Again though the difference with Carolina is that it was a pure buy out. The Canes literally took a 6.25M cap hit for no reason other than the first this year. Mind you they only actually paid him 1.25M since he was traded after his signing bonus but the agreement of the trade was that he would be bought out to go and sign with San Jose. With Johnson you are still trading for his contribution. Winnipeg and Calgary would probably be teams interested in that.

Not very attractive to Buffalo. Maybe Johnson would have made more sense, although I don’t even know. I really wanted to see JT Miller in Buffalo, but our GM, as usual, slept through everything.

Lets just say that Tyler Johnson isn't waiving for Minnesota, Nor is Palat waiving for Ottawa. Coburn isn't waiving for Calgary. Yeah it's that easy none are waiving for those respective teams.
