He was just as terrible as his predecessor Tim Murray. The drafting has been worse than abysmal. Nylander (traded) and Mittelstadt have been complete busts so far. Neither Murray nor Botterill drafted an impact player in the 2nd-7th rounds. In fact, BUF hasn't drafted an impact player outside the top 2! Systemic Failure.

Olofsson is a good player outside the first round and I think it is a little early to call Mittelstadt a bust

The good news is that this prevents Jason Botterill from doing something stupid with the seventh overall pick in a desperate effort to save his job.

In the interest of fairness, the Sabres are among the teams who have gotten the best haul in terms of impact players from the draft since 2014. You're correct in saying they haven't gotten much beyond the first 2 picks (besides Olofsson) and they've been competing with a stacked deck in terms of the number and value/potential of the picks available to them.

Teams that drafted the most "impact" since 2014:
Vancouver
Philadelphia
Buffalo
Carolina
Toronto

Teams that have drafted the least impact:
Los Angeles
Pittsburgh
Rangers
Minnesota
Florida

What's your definition of "impact" or "impact player"?

Influencing NHL games with their on-ice performance.

I'm sure "impact player" could be quantified with a little research, but I do believe this theory of yours will hold up when tested. But, I strongly believe that BUF has been completely mismanaged for the last decade or so. They desperately needed to build through the draft, not UFA! Good teams almost always have key players drafted in later rounds and developed in-house. Either Mittelstadt or Cozens has to develop into a #2 C with 60+ points per season.

Hindsight is 20/20. There were a few other top prospects entering that year whose development trajectory has taken a detour: Borgstrom, Zadina, Kotkaniemi.
