I think Ottawa might be concerned about contract numbers with a deal like this. It would get complicated fast, especially with 2 picks in the top 6 as they'd likely be players they'll want to sign after the draft. It could mean losing players they'd rather keep in order to keep players they don't want to have (Eriksson, Sutter, Baertschi). But the 1st round pick and Virtanen certainly make it a tempting offer...

most of these guys are LTIR career ending candidates... Eriksson contract ($6M until 2021-22) is awfull and baertschi even more painfull

sutter also has a big contract for a middle 6 Right wing... IMO he is now a 3R and no more

I like this deal from an OTT perspective. Virtanen is a perfect fit for the group much like Brown was last year. They hold onto Sutter and Sven, build their trade value and move them at the TDL at half retention for mid round picks and bring up some young guys. The only problem is Eriksson but the 1st takes care of that. This is the perfect move for a team that has to actually spend some money to get to the floor and allow some young guys to develop a little more. Van opens up loads of salary t sign Toffoli and more. Seems like a win win for teams at different levels of a rebuild/contender.

I think everyone knows that Melnyk is going to prefer going after big salary guys that are on career-ending LTIR so he gets their cap hit while insurance pays their salary. Ericsson and Sutter might be dead weight, but Melnyk would still have to pay them. Ottawa says no. If there was somehow for Ottawa to acquire Luongo's cap recapture penalty, Melnyk would be all in.

    OTT declines.

    The value is not there.

Trymankin is the price to dump Baertschi. Virtanen is to be fair much better then dumping Sutter, but the 2021 1st is 1/3rd the price of dumping Loui and Virtanen isnt enough to make up the difference

Sutter is expensive, and takes a roster spot. He costs to dump. Baertschi wasnt even claimed on waivers and has a couple Mil next to his name, he will cost you to dump.

Its so annoying people who refuse to acknowledge that it COSTS something to dump millions of dollars.

I do need to issue a correction, the 1st is enough to dump Half of Loui, he only has 2 more full years.

OTT needs to reach the cap floor. It's one season. those are cap dollars they get back in one season and they aren't even competing. Virtanen and a 1st is plenty

Were not gonna have problems reaching the cap floor. If we want to weaponize the cap space I think we can do better.

Its the exact right idea though

no harm imo. Think about it this way. in 2 seasons, OTT will have Virtanen, Trymakin, and an extra first round pick with the cap space they spent opened and what will they have lost in that moment? just a 6th. The team will be competitive with that cap, Virtanen, an extra pick, and Trymakin for free basically. Just the way I look at it.
