If Sandin And Robertson Arent Ready

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2020
Published: Jun. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pretty much the Leafs defence is set next season with Dermott getting a full time role alongside Rielly in the top 4. I feel if Sandin isn’t ready, the Leafs could trade for someone like Oleksiak of Dallas or sign Maatta to a 1 year deal under 2 if the Hawks buy him out. Also uncertain if the Leafs will give Robertson a full time spot next season, so just sent Bracco for 2 busts.

Does anyone else have concern that the toughest guy on this team is someone you need to trade for...and he's the only one? It just seems like this team is built for points in the regular season.

Tough decision for Dallas. 2nd rd'er probably gets the green light. Tough part is, Oleksiak hasn't ever really fit in Dallas, but he's certainly got more experience than Rosen whose yet to really establish himself across multiple teams and seasons. The $1M retention makes Dallas hesitate, but I think in the end it's too hard to pass up the draft asset and a young player would likely at minimum is equal in effectiveness to Big Rig.

I think you gave up too much for Oleksiak. I rather have Mayfield for a 2nd.

If we're trading Mayfield, it'll be for a forward. No reason to trade him for a draft pick when he barely saves us any cap.

I think the Leafs will make 1 or maybe 2 moves. I think Johnsson is going to get moved to a team that needs speed and depth for futures. Kerfoot may get moved as well but I am not sure that is a certainty. Beyond that I don't think anything else happens. Dermot, Sandin, Lehtonen and Liljegren will battle it out for the blueline and Marincin and Rosen will be the spares. If Liljegren impresses, I could see Sandin being sent down but I think the likelier scenario will be Rielly paired with one of Lehtonen or Dermott and the other playing with Sandin. Either way its a young, fast, highly skilled blueline that will emphasize the Leafs strengths and I think really work in the Keefe system.

Toughness is such an old school thought pattern, personally I like the idea of bringing Clifford back for under 1.5 million on a 2 or 3 year deal but beyond that, toughness is just something fans like. The team needs to be mentally tough, and that comes with age a little bit. I was talking to a buddy about this the other day and what I think you'll see more and more is the Leafs young guys getting angrier with age, they'll get more urgent. Every year you don't win is another year closer to the end of your career and as you age, you just naturally want that ultimate prize. That fire grows, which is why you saw Matthews getting a little meaner and actually throwing some hits this season. Its going to build.

This is certainly a fair opinion. I enjoy having this debate quite frankly. I agree that it's an older school thought pattern. 100% But there really isn't any indication that now or the next 3 years things are going to change drastically. In Fact last year BOS/STL finals could mean that the attempt for "The Future" is really hurting teams. They're trying to be the future before it gets here. Patrick Sharp even said they were human missiles out there. BOS/STL are again the top seeds in the NHL with the Caps/Flyers right behind them.

Now, I'm not saying go be the broad street bullies again, but it's kinda a requirement to be able to have that kind of game in your pocket because at some point in the playoffs....you're going to see it...and you're going to have to beat it.

TO outhit Boston in the first round last year. Physicality wasn't what undid TO, more than anything it was the PK. TO outscored and outchanced Boston at 5v5 but allowed a goal on over half the PP chances against. That and Babs playing Marleau more than Matthews in the 3rd period of game 6 were the reasons TO lost. Kadri deserves some blame as well which totally blows up the whole toughness hurts TO. Their "toughest" player literally cost them a chance to advance. I like a good hit and I think TO could use a little extra energy but I also think it will come from within, or by finding someone cheap who can add some moxy to the 4th line. I'd like Clifford back to do that but it has to be cheap. There just is no point in paying a guy much more than a million to go out and hit some guys sometimes and accomplish very little else. Kapanen is progressing as a more physical guy so that helps and I think others will pick up a little bit more of a taste for that stuff as well but spending big on getting the next Matt Martin is a total waste of cap space.

I can see your point and agree on PART of it. As a Hawks fan, I can remember every single (other fan base) saying that the Hawks can't be physical enough to win a cup because STL will grind them down. All the Hawks fans would say...the only way to have a "hit" is when you don't have the puck...so that's just fine with us. I can subscribe to that part 100%. There's a subtle, BUT IMPORTANT difference in what we're saying. You're using hits ALONE as physicality. To which I would also agree that it's PART of physicality. Example - Marian Hossa's hit total for each the regular seasons the Hawks won the cup was...14 hits...13 hits...26 hits... But he was one of the most physical players on the Hawks team. I don't see the board battlers or ANY player (except probably Tavares, I'll give you that one) that can move someone else off the puck.

Then you aren't watching enough, Hyman may be the best player in the league at getting the puck back. Marner is underrated along the boards as well. Nylander's cycle game is hands down best on the team. We are totally on the same page here, I think the desire to battle through everything is something TO needs more of and I think it's coming with time and experience, many seem to forget just how young TO is. Matthews is in his 4th season only.

Most definitely but his forechecking and play along the boards is what he is known for. He's really good at it.
